About the Author

Born and raised in Texas, Robert Ervin Howard (1906-1936) dreamed of becoming a fiction writer from the age of nine. He finally found success beginning with the publication of “Spear and Fang,” “which appeared in the July 1925 issue of Weird Tales Magazine.

Howard was highly introverted and had a terrible temper which resulted in his repeated job loss. He worked odd jobs and wrote as much as he could. In 1928 he introduced his character "Solomon Kane" in the story "Red Shadows." In 1929 he wrote "The Shadow Kingdom" which introduced his character "Kull" from Atlantis, the forerunner to Conan. By the end of the 1920s, Howard was making a comfortable living off of his writing, selling most of his work to Weird Tales Magazine.

Howard is best known for his Conan the Barbarian stories. These were the culmination of the "Swords and Sorcery" genre of adventure he was instrumental in developing. The first Conan story, The Phoenix on the Sword was actually a Kull story that had been rejected and that he reworked. It was followed quickly by The Scarlet Citadel and The Tower of the Elephant. Howard wrote twenty-one Conan stories overall. In 1936, Howard published The Hyborian Age which had been his mythical outline of the world of Conan.
