Haunting Legends Turn Real
Sang Kromah Debuts with Dark Young Adult Fiction Novel, Concealed 10.15.11

Manhattan, NY- While most of us were told fairytales of princesses losing slippers and beauties being awakened with kisses as children, author Sang Kromah drifted off to sleep with stories of dwarfish baby snatchers, unearthly beauties, and looming shapeshifters. These were the tales her parents shared from their native land of Liberia, weaving dark and alluring characters of mystical beings before their daughter's eyes fluttered closed and she drifted off to sleep. It therefore seems only natural for Kromah's debut novel Concealed to be a modern day cautionary tale that pays tribute to lore of her ancestral lands.

Concealed is a powerful story about the Djinn and a love that should have never been. Literally meaning "to hide" or "to be hidden," the Djinn are sometimes hostile creatures with a wide array of powers that include granting wishes, but a far cry from the friendly genies people have become accustomed to. With the backdrop of this shadowy, unknown world, the story explores the human experience of finding yourself and having the courage to choose your own destiny.

Kromah stages the story in modern-day Sykesville, Maryland in a quiet suburb. She weaves an account of an unusual sixteen-year-old orphan, Bijou Fitzroy, and the dark world of the Djinn that normal human eyes cannot see. Bijou is different, however, with an intuition that lets her feel other's emotions and eyes so unusual that they make many uneasy to meet her gaze.

Upon Bijou's arrival in the sleepy town of Sykesville with her nomadic grandmother, the local inhabitants begin disappearing. Bijou also has dreams at night of a mysterious faceless boy. Gradually, her true identity is revealed and she finds herself at the center of a war that she never knew was being fought.

With Concealed, Kromah unleashes a rich and unsettling novel that has the feel of a fable told in ancient tongues but is expressed in a refreshingly modern way. It is dark, alluring and truly captivating.

Meet the Author

Sang Kromah grew up in the sleepy suburb of Sykseville, Maryland, the setting of her debut novel Concealed. As a child, Kromah would sit in the living room with her brother and listen to her parents recount the fairytales of their native land of Liberia, absorbing in the words and pictures. Born a storyteller, Kromah would run away with the words, creating her own stories with the mythical, alluring creatures in her head.

Among the fables of night-walkers, sirens that lived in the ocean and beings that drank blood, one that stood out to Kromah was that of the "Djinn." Delving deeper into the word, her research led her to similar stories from various countries of creatures that went by different names, but most of them were about magic lamps and three wishes, which wasn't the direction she wanted to take. Eventually her father pointed her to the Latin root "Janna" which means to conceal, and so the idea for her novel was born. While writing the novel, Sang became so absorbed by all the research and legends that she created that she started to see signs of these mythical beings in other people. So real was the world she dreamed up that she would startle herself while taking the train or walking to get coffee!

While Concealed is Kromah's debut novel, she is no stranger to writing. She freelances for a variety of jobs, being a Copywriter, Editor and Public Relations Specialist. Kromah also, interned at Seventeen Magazine. While most would think that that would be enough to be kept busy, Kromah also models in her "spare time," with notable appearances in Essence Magazine and Jet Magazine.

Like any well-rounded New Yorker, Kromah is a quirky film-fanatic and adventurous foodie, with a well stamped passport and a keen fashion sense. Her greatest achievement thus far is having written Concealed. She remembers when as a kid, whenever she'd have to introduce herself in class, she always said she would, one day, write the next Great American Novel. Kromah's not the type to go back on her word.

Kromah is planning to write a whole series around the plot of Concealed.

About Kromah's charity: Kromah is involved with Resources and Outreach for Liberia, which assists refugees in America, internally displaced persons in Africa, and delivers medical and education programs in Liberia.

    I Couldn't Put It Down

I'm usually not one for YA-fiction, but a friend was reviewing it and I happened to pick it up. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. The story seems well researched and I fell in love with all of the characters (villains included). I read an advertisement for the book about choosing sides, but after reading the first installment of this series, it's a pretty tough choice. Maybe I'll be able to decide after reading the 2nd book. You won't be able to put it down, and the girls will fall in love with Sebastian...maybe even Niko (my friend did!).

Is there a release date for the second book yet?

    Highly Recommended--a certified page turner

I was spellbound from her great storytelling, colorful yet complex characters, and couldnt help but laugh out loud at their sense of humor, besides the book being well written and captivating, it made me appreciate my culture even more, the mention of Liberia, mami wata, mandingo tribe and the names of the character gave Concealed an exotic edge that has its roots in Africa. It was exciting, and the magical yet realistic world Kromah creates will tramsport you to a world far beyond your imagination...I cant wait for Book 2!!!!

    Highly Recommended

In life experiences, one sometimes finds himself/herself in an extra- dimensional state with no way of clarity. In pursuit of answers, a single person is sometimes assigned to take the burden of bringing relief or release to a culture, community, race, etc, etc. An example of this is found in the name of “A Chosen One”. The mere thought or attempt to decipher create more unanswered questions. MS. Kromah’s ability to cleverly define roles and her graphic descriptions of characters, situations, and scenery in Concealed confirms and suggests the co-existence of powerful diametrical extraterrestrial beings within our own sphere; make you to want to know what’s next. From the context of Concealed, I resolved that without being shape-shifted, sometimes we interact with them, work with them, and even fall in love with them. Though we all operate within the same sphere, our encounters with the otherworld are mostly accidental. However, any deliberate attempt to explore the remote regions of the otherworld, we most likely lose our moorings and wander off into a negative entropy. Reading Concealed is an adventure that one cannot explain, define nor describe to anyone but to read it yourself. Concealed is brilliantly written with a familial taste within the human context. At some point, I found myself to be part of the saga and cannot wait to see where the next book will take us. Bravo, every great performance deserves an encore!!!

Best YA Book Since The Lovely Bones

First off, I'll start by saying that the synopsis on the back of the book does not do this story justice. My younger sister's high school book club was given Concealed to read, because apparently, the author went to her high school (Liberty High in Eldersburg, MD), where the book takes place.

I'm not one for social networking sites at all, but I finished reading Concealed about thirty minutes ago and I was so inspired to write. The book is told in first person narrative and as I read the story, I felt like these things were happening to me. I COULD NOT put Concealed down!

Concealed is the tale of a sheltered homeschooled sixteen year old, whose world is turned upside down when her grandmother abruptly moves them to this small Maryland town and enrolls her in high school for the first time. The MC, Bijou is like a walking train wreck, but very lovable and quite hilarious. She's funny without trying to be, making me laugh out loud and get embarrassed for her all at once.

Kromah weaves a magical tale that sets the stage for what seems to be an epic series. The book redefines many of the creatures and stories we think we know, giving birth to a story that is truly unique and frightful at times.

While there are a few typos, it still did not take away from this epic tale.

What I loved so much about Concealed is the fact that no character is completely good or evil. You find yourself sympathizing for the so-called bad guys in many instances.

And I am quite girls will have a hard time deciding whether they're "Team Sebastian" or "Team Niko". I'm Team Sebastian all the way!

This is the best book I've read since The Lovely Bones. Bijou Fitzroy is my kind of girl...the type that wants to save herself!
