  • Real life scenarios (What If? features) encourage students to work on critical decision- making skills. These scenarios can have many applications, such as simple decision-making practice sessions alone or with another student or, ideally, as the script for role-play exercises in a sports-injury class laboratory practice session.
  • Time Out boxes highlight additional information related to the text, such as NATA Athletic Helmet Removal Guidelines, guidelines for working with an injured athlete, how to recognize the signs of a concussion, and first aid for epilepsy
  • Athletic Trainers Speak Out boxes feature a different athletic trainer in every chapter who discusses an element of athlete care and injury prevention

The text also includes:

  • Guidelines for CPR, AED, and management of bloodborne pathogens
  • Overview of the educational requirements to become a BOC certified athletic trainer.
  • Information on coaches as first responders
  • Numerous medical images to illustrate the injuries described in the text
  • New information relative to participation after knee injuries and updated information on prevention of ACL injuries (Ch 15), sports hernias (Ch14), and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and breathing disorders (Ch13)
  • Anatomy reviews in relevant chapters to introduce body parts to students unfamiliar with human anatomy and provide a refresher for students who have had human anatomy

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Katie Rovtar, MSEd, ATC, LAT (Mississippi State University)
Description: This book describes injuries in the athletic setting, the anatomy involved, and general evaluation skills for athletic training professionals.
Purpose: The purpose is to address the prevention, care, and management of sports-related injuries.
Audience: "It is written for students in athletic training, physical therapy, or physical education. Overall, the book efficiently covers all the main areas of sports medicine on a student level. "
Features: It takes an in-depth look at athletic injuries. Chapters are well divided into topic areas or specific body parts. Administration areas are also covered, such as emergency planning, lightning policies, and heat illness strategies. I particularly like the chapter on thermal injuries, which hits all the major highlights of the NATA guidelines for heat illness. Throughout the book, "time out" and "speak out" boxes provide real life examples. NATA tips for exercising in the heat appear on the inside cover, which emphasizes the importance of recognizing heat illnesses properly. I wish the anatomy pictures had been of better quality; they would help readers when examining the athlete's injuries. The information about lawsuits is interesting and helpful.
Assessment: This book provides a good basis in sports medicine, without getting bogged down in unnecessary information for novices. This new edition is definitely needed as the profession grows with new position statements and policies.
