Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Janie Canty-Mitchell, PhD, RN (Indiana University School of Nursing)
Description: The authors examine contents, dimensions, and themes of professional nursing practice. Contextual issues covered include nursing history, professional socialization, client systems, and healthcare delivery systems. The dimensions of nursing covered include the political, economic, and ethical/legal forces that influence nursing practice. Themes of nursing practice address such issues as caring, health promotion, teaching and learning, critical thinking, nursing research, and information technology.
Purpose: The authors comprehensively explore issues and concepts that influence professional practice and the delivery of nursing care. The complexity and dynamic nature of nursing require this issue-oriented book as part of nursing education curricula. The authors met their stated objectives in writing the book.
Audience: Originally written for RN-BSN completion students, the book can also be used in foundational courses in basic bachelor of science programs and core courses in graduate nursing programs. The authors and contributors appear to be credible authorities on the subject matter.
Features: The authors use illustrations that are pertinent to each chapter's focus. The references are expansive, current, and suitable for the context, dimensions, and themes presented. The overall appearance is appealing, including the color and designs on the book's cover, the printing, the layout of each chapter, and the graphics. Unique features not covered in competitive texts are issues relating to political influences, economic issues, social and cultural dimensions, and information technology.
Assessment: This is an excellent book to be used by undergraduate nursing students in traditional and RN-BSN nursing programs. Each chapter features learning objectives, profiles of nurses in practice that reflect the focus of the chapter, an overview of key points of each chapter, and critical thinking exercises. These added features enhance the book's utility to students and instructors. I recommend the book for use by educators.
