Description: This is the third edition of a well respected compendium of information about the works of major nurse theorists. Each of 14 models is described and subjected to an internal analysis of its assumptions, consistency and adequacy and an external analysis of its relation to research, education, and practice.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to synthesize and extend nurses' familiarity with and ability to critically evaluate models that embody the essence of nursing. This newest edition "explores how nursing models might guide newer elements within nursing, such as nursing diagnosis." These objectives are important, and the authors have accomplished them.
Audience: The book is written primarily for graduate (master's and doctoral) students, but would also be appropriate as a reference for undergraduate students studying nursing theory. The authors are both recognized authorities in the area of nursing theory.
Features: There are very few illustrations, but few are needed. References are up-to-date. The book has a pleasant, uncluttered appearance which is appropriate to the subject matter. A desirable feature of the book is that the format for describing the basic components of each theory and for analyzing and evaluating it is consistently applied. Reference lists are excellent.
Assessment: This is the updated version of a classic text in nursing theory. The authors incorporate contemporary views of nursing theory in their general discussion of current debates and issues, and as they describe and evaluate the individual theories. The most unique and valuable aspects of the book are 1) the comprehensive review of research on each model and its application in nursing education and practice, and 2) the relation of each theory to nursing diagnosis. This is an essential reference for everyone studying nursing theory.

Introduction

The 1st edition of this text was published in 1983. At that time our intent was to familiarize students with nursing models and to present a scholarly analysis of the models using a consistent format across models. In addition, our goal was to excite and challenge students to use these grand theories in research and practice. By the 2nd edition in 1989, most students were familiar with the nursing conceptual models, and we focused on presenting a historical panorama of models, again using the most current and best sources for explanation and analysis. The 3rd edition, published in 1996, was focused on synthesis and extension of our previous work. In that edition, we focused on the application of the nursing models to nursing practice, with specific attention to the relationship of the nursing models to nursing diagnoses guiding nursing interventions. This 4th edition comes at a time when there is significant integration of nursing conceptual models with both middle-range nursing theories and practice level theories throughout the discipline.

As nursing models have come to be understood as the embodiment of nursing philosophies, presenting the beliefs, understandings, and purposes of the discipline of nursing, it is most appropriate that they guide research, education, and practice. According to Ellis (1983), nursing models articulate the essence of nursing and serve as tangible sources of the perspective of nursing across time. Many of these conceptual models serve as sources for extensive programs of research, as curricular organizers, and as templates for practice. All of the models embody the nursing perspective and therefore may be used to guide knowledge developmentwithin nursing.

Within this 4th edition, the authors explore how nursing models might guide newer elements within nursing, such as the standardized nursing languages. Some models lend themselves to this application and some do not. The first two chapters present nursing conceptual models within the context of theory development within the discipline of nursing. We explore how nursing models may be used, along with other methods, to guide middle-range and prescriptive/practice theory development. Because there has been a shift toward emphasis on the development of practice theories for nursing, we have suggested analysis and evaluation guidelines that nursing might use to address such practice level theory. In this analysis we suggest that the perspective of nursing from conceptualization at the broadest levels, along with other criteria, be used to analyze and evaluate these theories. Likewise, as middle-range theory in nursing is used to guide nursing research, it too has become an important element within the knowledge base of the nursing discipline. Therefore, we also suggest middle-range theory be examined with nursing models as perspective and with the addition of related criteria. Examination of the full range of nursing theory in light of the perspective of nursing has long been advocated. If this examination is completed with nursing models as exemplars, the nursing discipline will be enhanced with a logically developed, coherent body of knowledge.

We believe that the analyses and evaluation methods presented in this text are an important way to develop a coherent knowledge base within nursing. Faculty and students in graduate programs in nursing will find this text most helpful in the development and evaluation of the theoretical base for advanced nursing practice, research, and education. Undergraduate faculty and students may also find this text valuable as a method by which to evaluate their theoretical base and apply the concepts to professional nursing practice.
