Overview

Thirty years ago, this best-selling book defined the "conceptual" approach to introductory physics. Today, the Ninth Edition shows how text and media can be integrated to bring physics to life for non-scientists. <P> Hewitt's book engages readers with analogies and imagery from real-world situations to build a strong conceptual understanding of physical principles ranging from classical mechanics to modern physics. With this strong foundation, readers are better equipped to understand the equations and formulas of physics, and motivated to explore the thought-provoking exercises and fun projects in each chapter. Icons in this new edition direct readers to The Physics Place web site (www.physicsplace.com) where they will find interactive and animated tutorials, video demonstrations, and hundreds of problems and activities. This new text-media combination gives readers more of what they need -whether it's animated explanations or interactive exercises -to make the connections between the concepts of physics and their everyday world. For college instructors and students.

Meet the Author

Paul G. Hewitt

Former silver-medal boxing champion, sign painter, uranium prospector, and soldier, Paul began college at the age of 27, with the help of the GI Bill. He pioneered the conceptual approach to teaching physics at the City College of San Francisco. He has taught as a guest teacher at various middle schools and high schools, the University of California at both the Berkeley and Santa Cruz campuses, and the University of Hawaii at both the Manoa and Hilo campuses. He also taught for 20 years at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, which honored him with its Outstanding Educator Award in 2000. He is the author of Conceptual Physics and a co-author of Conceptual Physical Science and Conceptual Physical Science Explorations (with John and Leslie).

physics doesn't get any clearer than this

Any intelligent nine year old can and should understand Conceptual Physics by Paul Hewitt. If you're capable of understanding physics at all, you can understand this book. If you're going to drive a car, you should have a basic knowledge of classical physics. It does not require a great deal of math to understand and predict velocity and momentum. Conceptual Physics is clearly written, entertaining and I have not found any errors. My one complaint is that it does not bring up cancellation of units, which can help students check for errors in their work. For a textbook with a more thorough mathematical grounding, try Sears Zemansky and Young, a classic for something like 50 years. Sears Zemansky and Young is, however, a college textbook for science and engineering majors which requires knowledge of calculus and excellent reading skills and attention span.

    Absolutely Horrible!!!!!!!!!

I am a ninth-grade student struggling with physics, all because of this book. It does not explain concepts well. It has the most pathetic and childish cartoons every other page. It tries to avoid showing equations and math, because the author seems to think that high school students are incapable of doing simple algebra. And then at the 'Chapter Reviews', where they ask questions on the chapter, they ask problems that involve lots of algebra. If they don't explain how to use the equations in the first place, (or most of the time, don't even give you the equation,) then how are you suppose to solve the problem? My entire class in school is failing physics. I would love to go into a career in science, but by the end of this year, I'll know nothing about physics (thanks, again, to this book). Sure, this book may seem great to THOSE WHO ARE LIKE THIRTY YEARS OLD AND HAVE ALREADY LEARNED PHYSICS but for the rest of us? No. It's not working. So if your NOT being forced to learn complex physics, for the first time, at age fifteen or fourteen, with this book, then you have no idea how hard it is. So for those of you who think this book is good just because you ALREADY understand physics, don't you dare give this book a good rating, because it sucks and it is making my life miserable, along with who-knows-how-many other teens. If I could, I'd give this book ZERO stars, or maybe -100 stars.

    Zero Stars

Please don't get this book. If you have this book and are being forced to study it in school, then I pity you. We are in the same boat. I'm using this book (against my will) in science class in school. I absolutely loved physics in eighth grade, it was so interesting and was my favorite subject. But the physics book I had then was really good. This book is disorganized and confusing. You might think that you understand a chapter, but when you get to the review questions, you feel like you don't know anything at all. It avoids showing equations and algebra, so you don't get a good foundation for science. Some other people might think this book is good, but it's not. Don't buy it!

    Amazing

This book makes physics as simple as basic math. The way all the theories and laws are explained are unbelievably easy. I recommend this book to any one who wants to learn physics, this book will be the best you have ever read. And I guarentee you will not fall asleep like other physics books would make you do.

Intimidated by Physics? Get This Book

I am currently a Behavioural Science Major in my sophomore year, and signed up for Concepts of Physics as a General Ed. course this semester against much trepidation. I always dreaded the subject. It turned out that this book 'Conceptual Physics' by Hewitt was the recommended text and it changed my life.Hewitt makes each concept come to life. His style is simple and the layout of the text makes reading easy. This along with the colourful illustrations make this book quite effective.I particularly like his application of the concepts to everday events and activities which helps those of us who are not scientifically minded to immmediately grasp the concepts.I also see his website not just as an excellent multimedia learning tool but also as a bonus, in that it aids in further reinforces the ideas. I would strongly recommend this book to all especially those who hate physics. Make this book your first item of purchase when you decide to do this course you'll not only learn but also enjoy it.( By the way I got an 'A' For this course!)
