Library Journal - Library Journal
This abridged dictionary of acronyms was prepared to meet the need for a small, moderately priced ready-reference book. Almost 5000 entries, which include abbreviations, were selected to meet the day-to-day needs of the general reader of popular magazines and newspapers. It is not intended to compete with the major standard work, Acronyms, Initialisms & Abbreviations Dictionary (Gale, 1987. 12th ed.), but librarians might wish to compare some other one-volume sources, such as Pugh's Dictionary of Acronyms and Abbreviations (Library Assn./ALA, 1987), which has over 18,000 entries. This is, however, a well-selected list of the most used acronyms that will serve well as a desktop handbook in many situations. Stephen H. Cape, Indiana Univ. Lib., Bloomington
