Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
As suggested by the scarcity of recent comparable works, preparation of a one-volume encyclopedia of chemistry is a herculean task, and the editors wisely set boundaries for its scope. A major area has already been covered in Concise Encyclopedia Biochemistry (De Gruyter, 1988. 2d ed.); this book focuses on approximately 12,000 topics in general, inorganic, organic, physical, and technical chemistry at the advanced level of the specialist. The entries are enhanced by the inclusion of structures, equations, diagrams, tables, and cross references. An especially worthwhile feature is the boxes highlighting safety information. However, the readability of the material is hindered by the use of only the first letter for subsequent mentions of a heading. Also, the IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) names may be confusing to Americans accustomed to CAS (Chemical Abstracts Service) nomenclature and registry numbers. Many of the subjects receive a brief treatment more appropriate for a chemical dictionary than an encyclopedia; there are also a few instances of incorrect or outdated information. Recommended only for comprehensive science collections.-Jan Williams, Monsanto Co., St. Louis, Mo.

This is more of an encyclopedic dictionary, with many entries having only a one-sentence definition. There is no index. Instead, a "see" reference is made for a term covered in a longer article. For example, under "shoe polish" is the reference "see Leather care products." This method works quite well, providing an easy way to locate discussions. The text of each longer entry is well written and understandable to the educated layperson. This book is smaller than the "McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Chemistry", a true encyclopedia with few dictionary entries. The number of terms covered in the "Concise Encyclopedia", however, is just as extensive, with shorter discussions of each. The "Concise Encyclopedia" is well illustrated, with many line drawings, tables, and charts A couple of minor points indicate de Gruyter's publishing standards may have been relaxed. The "Concise Encyclopedia Chemistry" is referred to in the preface as the "Concise Encyclopedia of Chemistry". It is described as a translation of "ABC Chemie", with no publication date. OCLC reveals that the real title is "Brockhaus ABC Chemie"; according to the publisher it was last published in 1987. These discrepancies do not, however, take away from the usefulness of the encyclopedia; they are only irritating for catalogers. This is a good, reasonably priced chemistry dictionary and is recommended for academic and public libraries.
