Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Corey Goldstein, MD (Rush University Medical Center)
Description: This easy to read, accessible handbook covers the entire realm of anxiety disorders. Included are descriptions of the various disorders, theories, treatment options, and tables.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide, in a concise format, information about anxiety disorders that is readily accessible to various healthcare providers. The guide is meant to complement the more detailed information found in lengthier textbooks and is designed to fit into a lab coat or jacket pocket to provide quick and easy access.
Audience: According to the author, the book is meant for psychiatrists, psychiatric residents, and medical students working in a variety of treatment settings. The book can also be a valuable tool for psychotherapists, nursing staff, and primary care physicians. The authors are highly credible authorities in the field.
Features: The guide covers a fairly comprehensive amount of information for a book of its size. All the basics are covered, and more. Each disorder is covered separately under such headings as epidemiology, diagnosis and differential diagnosis, course and prognosis, various theories, and treatments. The book is particularly well organized with tables throughout providing comparative information and quick facts.
Assessment: This is simply a great book that has many uses for a wide array of treatment providers. It is detailed enough for the experienced psychiatrist, while simultaneously appealing to a broader group of clinicians. The size of the book enhances its usefulness in terms of flexibility without compromising important details. It is a welcome addition to the field and its authors' credentials elevate it to a higher status than similar books. It is a pleasure to read.
