Editorial Reviews

Michael J. Schrift
This is an extremely interesting, practical, comprehensive, and small new book written by well-known clinician/researchers covering the field of neuropsychiatry and behavioral neurology. The purpose is to provide a reference text that can be used to quickly access diagnostic and treatment information for the care of patients with neuropsychiatric disorders. In my opinion, it is the Wash U manual for neuropsychiatry. The book provides discussions of clinical assessment and guidelines for the management of patients with these disorders. The authors stated that they intended to provide the most critical facts and bibliographies that should guide more extensive reading. The intended audience is neuropsychiatrists, behavioral neurologists, and psychiatrists who are interested in evaluating and treating patients with neurological and psychiatric disorders. It would also be most useful to both psychiatry and neurology residents in training as well as medical students that are interested in this field. This small book contains 14 sections covering neuropsychiatric assessment, behavioral neurobiology, neuropsychiatric symptoms and syndromes, movement disorders, stroke and brain tumors, white matter diseases and inborn errors of metabolism, head injury and its sequelae, and treatments in neuropsychiatry. The tables and figures are voluminous and one of the best parts of the book. This is an outstanding, useful, and highly relevant small manual written by internationally known clinician/researchers. This is a book that no neuropsychiatrist should be without. It is one of the most useful books I own.
William M. Greenberg

This book would be most useful for medical students or resident physicians, who can use it for review and carry it conveniently for reference, but it could also be of value for other practitioners who regularly work with individuals with neurological disorders and their psychopathological sequelae.

Reviewer: Raj Tummala, MD (Wyeth Pharmaceuticals)
Description: This is a well-written, interesting, and clinically practical reference manual on neuropsychiatric disorders.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a quick reference pocket manual for physicians in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of the patient with neuropsychiatric deficits. This book is meant not only for psychiatrists and neurologists, but also for everyone dealing with the neurosciences. The book largely meets its overall objective.
Audience: This book is targeted towards general psychiatrists, neuropsychiatrists, neurologists, students, and residents in both psychiatry and neurology. The author is very credible in clinical psychiatry.
Features: The book starts with a review of the fundamentals of a neuropsychiatric assessment, behavioral neurology and goes into details of the various neuropsychiatric disorders. Each disorder is described by epidemiology, clinical features, pathology, and differential diagnosis as well as algorithms for diagnosis. The book also has useful illustrations showing abnormal performances due to neuropsychiatric deficits.
Assessment: This is a very useful and easy to read manual that the clinician can use on a daily, quick reference basis. The book is written in a very practical, user-friendly format differentiating itself from other books in this category.
