This easy-to-use manual is a timesaving guide to assigning musculoskeletal impairment ratings for worker's compensation, personal injury, and disability claims. It follows most of the principles in the American Medical Association's Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment and presents these guidelines in quick-reference tabular format for busy clinicians.

Section One summarizes the procedures and terminology of impairment rating. Section Two contains rating tables for the upper extremity, lower extremity, spine, pelvis, skin, and pain. Appendices include tables for converting ratings from one body part to another and combining multiple injuries.

Reviewer: Mark R Hutchinson, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This is a concise guide to creating musculoskeletal and orthopedic impairment ratings and is designed to be a brief, efficient, and concise correlate to the much heftier AMA's Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment, 5th edition (2001).
Purpose: The primary goal of this inexpensive offering is to provide a user-friendly, concise alternative to the extensive, precise AMA guides to impairment. Anyone who has ever used the AMA guides will probably have dreamed of a more concise, efficient alternative. In this offering, the authors have succeeded in providing a quick reference that will fit in a lab coat pocket while still serving the role for rating 95 percent of musculoskeletal and orthopedic injuries.
Audience: It is targeted at professionals who routinely offer impairment ratings as part of their practice.
Features: The guide begins with a brief overview of impairment ratings including common terms, general guidelines, and techniques to address multiple impairments. Then it is broken into easy-to-flip-to anatomic sections on the upper extremity, lower extremity, spine, skin, and issues of complex regional pain syndrome. The book closes with a series of conversion and combined values charts.
Assessment: Dr. Wiggins should be commended for recognizing a challenge to professionals who provide impairment ratings and their desire to have a concise, straightforward alternative to the extensive AMA guidelines text. This is an admirable, cost-effective offering. I strongly recommend its purchase for all professionals who provide musculoskeletal impairment evaluations.
