Michelangelo painted ceilings. Diego Rivera painted walls. Today, great artists are drawn to skateboards as both canvas and muse, another outlet for the creativity that has made skateboarding an influential part of today’s pop culture. Concrete to Canvas brings together an impressive variety of skateboard art and features the hottest artists in the medium. Commentary on each artist, examples of his or her work, and quotes let graffiti artists, illustrators, graphic designers—and skateboarders!—enter this daring world of movement, color, and form. Whether the art is on the board itself, or created on decks, canvas, computers, or on the streets, it’s part of a streetwise revolution in art.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
As most of the artists featured in this volume point out, making art is a lot like skateboarding, and vice versa. Little surprise, then, that many of these artists use the idiom of graffiti. Both graffiti and skateboarding are fundamentally urban, requiring a visceral and often dangerous interaction with the hard surfaces of the American city; both demand that practitioners constantly be on the lookout for that perfect, unblemished surface; and both tend to drive cops and security guards nuts. Yet this is hardly a homogenous collection. Of the 29 artists profiled, roughly half practice some form of guerrilla urban art (graffiti, stencil and paste art, etc.), but the majority also work in more traditional mediums and nearly all have been featured in gallery shows. From the minimalist canvasses of Rob Abeyta Jr. to the hyperkinetic cartoonishness of Dalek and Andrew Pommier, the sheer artistic diversity on display is staggering. There is one problem with the volume as a whole: at 128 pages, it's too short by half. Like a dizzying skateboard trick, it's an exhilarating ride that ends much too soon. (Apr.) VOYA
The work of twenty-nine artists who skateboard is showcased in this collection via four-page spreads. Minimal information introduces the artists, often including a brief personal statement or comment. A gamut of styles is represented here: abstract, folk, tattoo, graffiti, and more. Much of the art reflects what was seen while skateboarding, such as graffiti in Chris Yormick's and Dave the Chimp's work, "creepy children's books . . . found in a dumpster" by Michael Sieben, and collected objects (such as discarded packaging) by Bobby Puleo. Despite the variety of styles and subject matter (robots, skateboarding Jesus), as with skateboarding, many share an urban, in-your-face street quality, which shows the influences of graphic novels (some have even written them), graffiti, comic books, and comic artists. Most have participated in group and solo shows. Web sites are listed in every artist's entry, but only a few have additional biographical information. This book is essentially a unique item but should only be purchased if your library has an audience for it. Love it or hate it, the art will appeal to enthusiastic skateboarders of any age, possibly graphic novel readers, and nonconformists who appreciate the culture of skateboarding. VOYA CODES: 3Q 2P S (Readable without serious defects; For the YA with a special interest in the subject; Senior High, defined as grades 10 to 12). 2005, Watson-Guptil, 128p.; Illus., Trade pb. Ages 15 to 18.
