Conditionalsby Frank Jackson
Here are some conditionals. 'If Bush continues to perform well, he will win a second term'; 'if today is Tuesday, then I am in Frankfurt'; 'if I forgot to put water in the radiator, then that noise means trouble'; 'if the stock market crash had not occurred, inflation would have become rampant'. Despite the ease with which we understand them, the frequency with which we assert or deny them, and the importance we attach to them, there is no theory of conditionals which has won general acceptance. Instead, there are a number of competing theories. This collection aims to introduce the reader to some of the most interesting current theorizing about conditionals.
