Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The author of Fat Men From Space and The Big Orange Splot, among other funny favorites, provides more offbeat chuckles in this easy reader take-off of King Kong. Captain Charles Handsome, a toothy walrus, sails with his girlfriend, Bouncing Betty Beautiful, to spooky Gull Island. There he encounters and captures Cone Kong, "an ice-cream cone of spectacular size." Of course, Captain Charles Handsome takes the creature back to the big city and puts him on display at the Ice Palace Theater. And of course, Cone Kong escapes, kidnaps Betty, and proceeds to climb Igloo Tower, the tallest building in the city. The citizens try to stop Cone Kong by throwing chocolate sprinkles and crushed peanuts at him. Although Cone Kong falls off the building, he meets a happier ending than his counterpart, King Kong. He escapes on the captain's ship before the world can learn what flavor he is. The goofy humor is sure to lure reluctant readers, while giving parents a good laugh. Jill Pinkwater's illustrations are colorful and hilarious, especially the pictures of a pink Cone Kong carrying Bouncing Betty Beautiful under his arm. 2001, Scholastic,
