Meet the Author

Although she left Nova Scotia at three, and has lived most of her life since in Ontario, Tanya Huff still considers herself a Maritimer. On the way to the idyllic rural existence she shares with her partner Fiona Patton, six cats, and a Chihuahua, she acquired a degree in Radio and Television Arts from Ryerson Polytechnic—an education she was happy to finally use while writing her recent Smoke novels. Of her previous twenty-three books, the five—Blood Price, Blood Trail, Blood Lines, Blood Pact, Blood Debt—featuring Henry Fitzroy, bastard son of Henry VIII, romance writer, and vampire are among the most popular.

    more from this reviewer

    Torin Kerr no-nonsense character

I enjoyed the book, a combination of two, as I have enjoyed several others of the military space sci-fi genre'. Tanya Huff's characters are bold and colorful as are her selection of sentient confed member species. However, the "Other" species is poorly defined and explained away as "not much known", which makes them, as a threatening species, sort of lame. Introducing the Silviss at least gives us a potential friend/threat to explore. The introduction of "the Big Yellow" at first is exciting and intriguing but fails to hold the imagination when we find that the race responsible reads your thoughts, produces those, then awaits a response. If Ms. Huff set out to have us be a lab rat, she succeeded. I really like to get into the head of the bad guys as well as to know my friends.

If I sound negative, her saving grace is her character, Torin Kerr, and her take charge, "I'll tell you when to breathe" character. She is exactly the kind of person you can wrap a story around. She even makes up for the weak villains portrayed. Her resolve carries through the remaining two books of the series, making the set a good read but nowhere near the level of the Honor Harrington (David Weber) series. Let's just say I have a few friends I trade books with of this type and I will probably not refer these along, although, for someone hungry for more books of honor, valor, code, and "the right stuff", this will get you through.

    Military Science Fiction doing great

Tanya Huff has created an interesting and diverse world in her Torin Kerr books. Futuristic worlds full of a myriad of alien beings and cultures, it explores the value of pacifistic views in the face of an implacable enemy. The scenes painted here are everything a Military Sci-Fi fan could want, attention to detail, explanation of general techs and motives, meaningful characters that make human(mortal?) mistakes, and plots that make sense.

    I Also Recommend:

Well constructed setting with excellent characters

I enjoyed reading this entire trilogy one after another. With no 'waiting for the next book to be published', I was able to move from book to book with the memory of the last firmly in my mind. This made for a complete emersion in the world created by Tanya Huff that was refreshing. The characters were well developed and likable. The plot was interesting and unique (one of the main qualities I look for in a book nowadays).

    Good military sci-fantasy

Readers should note first off that this is an omnibus of the books 'Valor's Choice' and 'The Better Part of Valor.' This is Huff's Sci-fi military action story. The main character Staff Sergeant Torin Kerr is in many ways a lot like the familiar Vicki Nelson from the Blood series, except Kerr works without the physical restraints of Nelson and fittingly gets proportionately more difficult settings and fights. Huff takes the interesting angle of using the Staff as the main character, rather than the usual use of the Commanding Officer, and using her fast-witted occasionally dry humor builds an interesting, fast paced story. This is not a very heavy military fiction, unlike Weber whose use of calculations and numbers can sometimes overwhelm lighter readers, but is instead a good introduction. The heavier more serious moments are liberally interspersed with humor, whit, and lively characters that help keep the story from being overwhelming. I use this often as a bridging book for those who like fantasy to get them more interested in scifi. I call it sci-fantasy because it's not about predicting a possible future, a warning, nor does it even really detail a serious sort of technology, but is really more of a fantasy that just happens to be set in the future. Many of the aliens can be fairly easily linked to some sort of typical fantasy races that you see.
