Sparks Fly … Lines Blur… and Hearts Break

Alexander Avery is rich, powerful and the sexiest man Angeline Hemming has ever laid eyes on: a man like every woman dreams about. Angel is not immune to his sensual and ruthless pursuit, and Alex is intoxicated by the beautiful doctor; overwhelmed with desire like he’s never known.

As the profiling case Angel is working on gets more and more dangerous, Alex finds himself filled with unfamiliar panic and emotional turmoil; his need to protect her goes against Angel’s adamant insistence that she doesn’t need his help. He isn’t a man to sit on the sidelines when the woman he’s obsessed with is threatened, so he takes control to protect her without telling her of his plans.

Angel’s fortitude is shaken when her stalker invades not only her personal life but also those close to her… even when that someone is powerful and seemingly untouchable. Professional ethics insist she keep the details or her work away from her lover, even as their newfound closeness has her yearning to confide in him. But, as Angel’s quest to protect her heart from Alex’s undeniable pull equals her need to keep him out of a dangerous situation, circumstances dictate a huge decision; which could have detrimental, and irreversible consequences for them both.

When danger threatens and jealousy reaches the boiling point, lies will be told and secrets kept… Even with the best intentions and the most undeniable connection … the deepest of loves will be tested.

Confessions After Dark is the much-anticipated second installment in the After Dark series by Kahlen Aymes. I had been waiting for the continuation of Alex and Angel’s story since I turned the final page on book one. Dr. Angeline (Angel) Hemming is a criminal profiler working a high-profiled and dangerous case. Alexander (Alex) Avery wants nothing more than to keep alleged rapist Mark Swanson as far away from Angel as possible. When independent and intractable Alex and Angel butt heads over keeping Angel safe or bringing a criminal to his knees, sparks fly, and the fallout is explosive. Angel has to be one of the most interesting, intelligent and frustrating characters I’ve read recently. She’s independent and strong, except when it comes to Alex. Then all of her reasoning goes out the window. I completely understand her fear of falling in love, of being vulnerable and of taking chances, but Angel takes it to a completely new and exasperating level. And if I was exasperated, well let’s just say her irrational fear was enough to utterly vex Alex. Alex, on the other hand, is his own kind of frustrating. Yes, he’s still sex personified, and it’s refreshing to see him completely enamored with Angel virtually to the exclusion of all else. Unfortunately, his overwhelming need to protect her at all costs, at times comes off as more caveman than protector, and its effect becomes more infuriating than appreciated. As frustrating as the game of cat-and-mouse was between these two characters is – I found the draw completely irresistible. Angel and Alex, despite their uncertainty and frustration (and sometime mistrust) with one other, are drawn to each other like a moth to a flame. The inexplicable temptation goes way beyond attraction – it’s an addiction that neither of them knows quite how to navigate. The only thing that satiates them is the each other, and yet it’s also the thing that threatens to destroy them. Confessions took a completely unexpected turn from book one, and at times I wasn’t sure if I could continue. The anxiety and continual torment these two characters caused each other had me on pins and needles shaking my head. Coupled with the action and danger elements that I hadn’t anticipated, (but admittedly loved), there were times when I had to quit, put the book down, and walk away, only to return literally minutes later because I couldn’t stand not knowing what was going to happen next. Finally, perhaps mercifully, the story of Angel and Alex did resolve. But then again, it didn’t. The After Dark series will conclude with Promises After Dark. I’m wanting… no, I’m craving, more Alex and Avery, but admittedly I’m hoping that Alex and Angel finally realize what I have recognized all along – that they are what the other cannot live without. (I think this is where I admit, I’m a sucker for happy endings.) Five heart-pounding, page-turning stars!

I'm rating Confessions After Dark 5 stars.  The story picks up right where Angel After Dark left off.  We have two strong alpha characters, Angel & Alex.  Danger is looming over the both of them and they will both do what it takes to keep each other safe, even if keeping each other safe means breaking hearts and keeping secrets. When the two come together, the draw they have towards one another is EXPLOSIVE.  Not able to keep their hands off one another, there it's a magnetism that draws them together.  They are not able to resist one another and they feel a "need" for one another that neither can explain. When they are apart, the situation becomes complicated.  The danger they are both in comes into light, secrets are no longer secrets, trust is a constant question.  Angel realizes her professional career has placed herself in danger, with that she knows her enemy will hurt her where it counts, Alex.  Protecting Alex, she does the inevitable, she breaks things off with Alex.  Doing this, she is also protecting herself, if she falls in love with Alex (the ultimate sexy, successful known playboy that doesn't do relationships), Angel will end up broken to the point of no recovery. Alex is fully aware that Angel is keeping secrets from him, in doing so, he's not able to reveal his own secrets.  Alex's involvement to protect Angel, has also put him in danger.  Alex will do anything it takes to protect Angel.  With a constant push and pull between the two, it's hard to know if these two people can really make a relationship work.  They are both stubborn, have strong personalities, and neither will give in easy.  For there to be a relationship, they both have to give and confess everything. A definite must read.  This book emotionally tied me to the pages, you can feel the conflicted emotions, the want, the anxiousness, their need. Kahlen again doesn't disappoint.  I personally can't wait for Promises After Dark to see what becomes of Alex & Angel ~Reviewed by Shannon (Book was gifted in exchange for an honest review)

Every time I pick up a new book by Kahlen Aymes it is even better than the last!! Her writing and flow is pure perfection. I was fighting to keep my eyes open as much as Alex and Angel fight for control, I just could not put it down! For those who have NOT read Angel After Dark seriously do not know what you are missing!!! If you have then be prepared because Confessions is even better!!!! I tried to take my time but I was just glued to it! The tension between Alex and Angel is pretty thick throughout the book; both trying to protect the other. Angel is terrified of a broken heart and tries to cut things off with Alex because she is convinced he will walk away once he is bored, but those who know Alex, know he isn't about to let that happen. The sexual tension between them is so thick I swear I could feel it! They try to stay away but the pull between them makes that impossible, so we get lots of sexual encounters with so much angst it is rolling off the pages. If you read book 1 then you know about the suspenseful situation that Angel is involved in. In book 2 it gets even more complex and my anxiety was through the roof waiting for things to play out! Gah!!!! I freaking love Kahlen's writing and I am anxiously awaiting book 3!!!! Confessions is not the end of the series, but you also do not have a hold your breath cliffhanger. This is a series for everyone no matter your flavor. It is so much more than just a love story between damaged characters. It is a book that will stay with you and make others hard to get into! LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!! Rating: 5 stars CHEERS!

4.5 stars for this book reviewed for Eye Candy Bookstore This was better than book one. Kept you on the edge of your seat! The scene with the dog and the note on the fridge almost made me piss myself. CAD was medium in length so I was not able to read it in one sitting, but if I could have skipped work, eating and sleeping for 24 hours I probably could have knocked this out in one wop- lord knows I wanted to! Angel drove me absolutely insane with her all over the place emotions and hard headed ways, as she was so strong and put together in AAD, so seeing her break down and cry and be so overly emotional and insecure in this book was somewhat surprising but not a turn off of her character. She still gave as good as she got when needed and broke a clavicle when necessary ;) (That will make sense if you read the book).  Alex's temper and need to be in control would make me absolutely insane and I am not sure I could be in a relationship with a man like him, but his chemistry with Angel is undeniable and the 180 she spins him in definitely changes parts of him for the better. I give this 4.5 stars, only deducting for a couple times I found myself skimming over parts that were not needed for the development of the story and added nothing for me. Definite recommend and loved it enough that I will probably find myself looking this up in my Kindle queue for a re-read again soon.
