Overview

In, Confessions of a Gay Anchorman, Charles Perez chronicles his years in the TV business, first as an entry level production assistant to a spot front and center at the anchor desk. Like anyone who’s risen up through their industry, Perez says, "when you go from the bottom up it gives you a very thorough perspective on the industry you work in." For Perez, as a gay man, the ride from bottom to top also became a journey in compromise as he moved further up the ladder of public exposure and professional success. Eventually, he says, that compromise became intolerable.

This book chronicles his ride from a very OUT young man behind the camera to nationally syndicated talk show host to a man who loses his dream job after a very public outing. He says it left him with a new-found conviction to stand up and do the right thing. Ironically, this great conviction came as a result of decisions that left his career as a newsman dead on the tracks and left him re-accessing the limits of being a gay man on TV.

In the pages of this book, Perez examines those limits while walking through the many choices and circumstances that brought him to a newfound place as a husband, father, gay man, writer, and political being.

Charles Perez's story is filled with courage, conviction and compassion.  His amazing journey has been lived to the fullest and on the edge.  Perez's ability to mesmerize the reader with his story is pure talented writing.
Howard Bragman
If they made a film about Charles Perez’ life no one would believe it.  This book is an amazing testament to the human spirit and the ability to embrace and accept change and adversity with grace, dignity and humor.

Meet the Author

Before anchoring at ABC’s flagship New York station WABC and ABC’s Miami Affiliate WPLG, Charles Perez entered the field of daytime talk show hosts with the launch of The Charles Perez Show in 1994. The show was his creation and his effort to bring the issues of the day to a younger demographic in a smart and critical format. The show ran from 1994 - 1996.

From 1997 - 1998 Perez co-Anchored the syndicated television news magazine American Journal with his sister, Michele Dabney-Perez. During that time he did numerous noteworthy interviews and covered the death of Princess Diana, while continuing to navigate the corporate waters as a gay man on national TV.

In 2000 he stepped full time into a new role as a street reporter and weekend news anchor at the Miami Fox affiliate WSVN. It was there that he truly transitioned into a professional news anchorman and would go on to report and anchor the news in New York City.

Most recently, Perez garnered headlines with a much publicized demotion and termination from his job at the Miami ABC station with headlines like, "Is Perez too Gay for WPLG?" While at Miami’s WPLG, the Emmy Award winning journalist won coveted interviews with notables, including Barack Obama and Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

In the wake of his termination Perez married his now husband, Keith Rinehard, in Westport, Connecticut in September 2009. They adopted their first child in July 2010.

Professionally, Perez has written for The Miami Herald, The Huffington Post, The Advocate and numerous other publications. As a frequent columnist and Op-Ed contributor, he brings a fresh and often personal perspective to the social and political conversations of our day. Perez has also appeared on numerous Television shows including Larry King, Bill O’Reilly and Good Morning America.

Perez is of Peruvian-American ancestry and lives with his husband and their daughter in Miami Beach.

A Powerful and Inspiring Message!! A MUST READ!!

This powerful and heartfelt book says it all and rightfully throws some major media big wigs under the bus (as it should). But isn't it time that the leaders and the voices in our community make some noise? There are teenagers killing themselves today because their schools, churches, families and society still defines being gay as wrong and second-class. There are teenagers locked in their rooms feeling so much fear and shame. What kind of messages are the current closeted media personalities and celebrities sending to youth when they say it's OK to hide and stay in the closet for their career. They're siding with the shame. I applaud Perez for bringing this to the surface. Perez's book has the most powerful message. NO SHAME!!

    A Book Everyone Should Read

A courageous, well written, easy to read and very personal account of Perez's life in a business that is more concerned about how things look than how things really are, as well as what it means to be a gay person in America and the personal struggles faced on a daily basis. That he is a man of good character and a good heart shines through in his writing and keeps the reader fully engaged. This is a book for everyone to read, gay or straight, and his message of acceptance, tolerance and respect for all people is important for us to hear and more importantly for our children to hear.

    Highly recommended

As I read this book I kept thinking to myself, "Wow. This is probably going to make some people very angry." But how great is that? Most people would be afraid to name names and write about what really goes on behind the scenes in television. Luckily for us Charles Perez isn't most people. As this book and his career proves he is willing to put everything on the line to speak the truth. This is a MUST READ...full of passion, courage and drama.

An Amazing Life, An Inspiring Book

By any account, Charles Perez has led a fascinating life. Whether hosting his own talk show, to co-hosting American Journal with his sister, to anchoring the news, to becoming a dad, Charles has done each with a seeming ease. Despite his struggles, Charles has persevered, and by reading his personal tale, we all benefit. At turns humorous, sad, and inspiring, readers are left profoundly changed. And, really, what else would one want from a book?
