Confessions of a Super Mom

Overview

"Every superhero has an Origin. To tell the truth, it's a little embarrassing. I wasn't put into a rocket and sent to Earth by my parents just as my home planet exploded. I wasn't given a special ring by visiting aliens. I wasn't bitten by a radioactive spider. No, it wasn't anything nearly so glamorous; my beginnings are quite humble. I was merely the innocent victim of a Horrible Swiffer Accident."

Meet Birdie Lee, clerk at Marvel Fine Food and Beverages and an average, middle-aged single mother of two teenagers. Until one ordinary morning when, on the floor of her bathroom, Birdie discovers a Stain of Unknown Origin--a stain so intense that nothing can remove it. When all her attempts fail, Birdie does the unthinkable: She loads her Swiffer with every cleanser she owns, aims, and shoots. Suddenly, Birdie becomes endowed with extraordinary powers. Now Birdie must somehow balance it all--her smug ex and his overachieving new wife; two teenagers and a string of PTA meetings; her own budding romance; and her beloved town of Astro Park, whose very existence is threatened by a mysterious force sneaking its way into every household. A delightful, well-earned escape, Confessions of Super Mom is an amusing vindication of the overlooked everyday heroism that is a woman's life.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Like its title character, this debut novel has a secret identity: while it appears too adorable at first, and too typical, it's unexpectedly poignant and packs an emotional punch despite the cheery veneer. Birdie Lee is a divorced, mild-mannered single mother of two who's proud of how she's raised her kids. She's a grocery store cashier with an obnoxious ex and an extensive knowledge of cleaning products, who's looked down upon by the town's ber-parents, Patty and Lex Osborne, beloved producers of patriotic snack foods. But when Birdie passes out after mixing incompatible cleaning solvents, she develops a scrubby-yet-soft right palm and the uncontrollable urge and ability to clean filthy bathrooms in a single swipe. Suddenly Super Mom, Birdie realizes that not only can she prevent underage drinking and improper car-seat use but that the Osbornes are plotting to control children subliminally through marketing and use them as guinea pigs. The cuteness cup runneth over now and then, but at the heart of this story is a narrative about a lonely, wronged woman who just wants to do right by her children and stand up to an uncontrollable world. Hauser slips in soliloquies on motherhood and womanhood that, though brief, are moving, showing us Birdie Lee's heart and in that, the wishes and dreams of super moms everywhere. (Sept.) Library Journal
The Incredibles, Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four, Sky High-it's all about superheroes these days. So what do you get when you mix chick lit with the comic book genre? Super Mom! Birdie Lee has two teenagers, a job as a checkout girl at her local grocery store, and a scowling ex-husband. After a dangerous combination of cleaning chemicals knocks her out cold, she awakens with strange powers. While Spider-Man slings webs, Birdie spews Swiffer cleaning fluid and has a right hand that doubles as a sponge, acute hearing abilities, and the capacity to sense if a child is in danger. In a funky costume made by her sidekick son, Birdie swoops in and cleans up messes while saving kids left and right. Her nemesis? Lex Osborne, president of New Cosmos Industries, a junk food manufacturer. When Super Mom uncovers a vicious plot involving the use of video games to hook children on the company's products, she must step in and save the day. Hauser's debut is really very silly and takes the superhero stuff a bit too far. How much can you suspend your disbelief? And how light do you like your chick lit? Purchase according to how your patrons would answer those questions.-Beth Gibbs, Davidson, NC Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

    Fun, fun, fun!!!

CONFESSIONS OF SUPER MOM is a thoroughly enjoyable read, yet it's far from fluff. Hauser does an excellent job of telling a story full of humor, while at the same time addressing issues important to any woman facing the challenges of motherhood. A must read for every super mom out there!

    Confessions of a new fan

Melanie Hauser flies onto the lit scene with a great book--with a great hook. Through the story of Birdie Lee, who gets Swiffered into superhero-dom, is reflected the enormous power of everyday moms--especially single mothers who still manage to be there for their kids while saving the rest of humanity. There's something for every reader here: speeding-bullet plot, sharp one-liners, a mush-resistant love story. And Hauser portrays Birdie with such genuineness that you begin to wonder if the author has her own secret identity. One not-so-secret thing: this is a great book. (P.S. I'm male!)

    A Great, Fun Novel

I recommend, 'Confessions of Super Mom, for all you hard-working, underpaid moms out there. It adds a bunch of humor to the wild side of being a mom. I couldn't help to relate to it, as I have been a foster mom to 5 adorable children. The balancing act is like a see-saw sometimes it goes smooth, while sometimes things just happen. Buy the book.

Have you ever caught yourself trying to juggle a hundred loads of laundry, supper on the stove, and a crying baby all at the same time? Then this book is a must-have for you. Your earned your title. Now read the book. You'll be glad you did. Melanie has added lots of humor as you turn each detailed page. I recommend it to all of us overworked and underpaid moms!
