This book is actually two novels packaged together so its really nice to see the Fran and Ben story from the very beginning. Got Fangs? is the first book and I thought was a very well written book with a good mix of romance and funny lines. I love Kate's use of funny vocabulary to convey the giddy feelings that Fran sometimes felt when she is around Ben. Fran and her mother are new performers in a traveling show called the Goth Faire, and in this faire the magic might really and truly be magic, and the bands use glamour to get crowds to cheer enthusiastically, even when they are horrible. The storyline of the robbery of the Goth Faire money is intriguing and keeps your attention, even when you are tossed back and forth between so many other side plots. The ending is true sequel set up and you are thankful that the second book is right on the next page. Circus of The Darned is a decent second book, picking up soon after Got Fangs? and has the Faire in Sweden. There is alot of use of conversational Swedish which is different but it gives you more of a feel of being right there with Fran. I liked the romance between Fran and Ben and how it still is a push and pull kind of thing for them. What I did not follow so much was the introduction of a band of Viking ghosts and the god Loki into the mix,, but the ghosts did offer some comic relief and they have a funny ability to take up modern technology. Overall, this is a great book for girls who like the vampire genre, but are looking for something a little different. This will keep you very satisfied and the romance is very squeal-worthy.

This book is a combination of two katie macalister books 'got fangs' and 'circus of the darned' written under her katie maxwell psuedonym. If you are lover of the dark ones series then its a great introduction before you embark on 'the in the company of vampires' book in the dark ones series. katie will not disappoint you if you read this book.

So, I am a huge fan of Katie MacAlister's Dark Ones books. And I have several on the TBR shelf. But I have been waiting to read them, because #8 In the Company of Vampires is actually a continuation of the adult relationship of Ben and Francesca. The main characters from Got Fangs? and Circus of the Darned. They have since been combined into one book, Confessions of a Vampire's Girlfriend.  Now I am going to be very clear, most of the time, I am not into YA Romance. The whole Twilight thing? *shudder* Let's just say, that I have a name for it: The Teen Drama Trauma and move on, shall we? So, I have had this books sitting and waiting to be read. I kept putting it off and putting it off. It would probably still be on my TBR shelf, if not for all these Reading Challenges I see going up. It got me to thinking, it is time to start clearing out some of the older books in the TBR pile. On that note, I finally worked up the nerve and dived in.  Honestly, it wasn't as bad as I feared. The signature Katie MacAlister humor and snarkiness is there. Yes, the 16 year old Francesca is moody and broody, but I think most anyone would have been in her shoes. She is trying to make the best of it, but as she keeps saying, "Her Life is Weird."  Fran is with her mom, touring around Europe as part of a Goth Faire. The only one near her age is a 15 year old boy, Soren. Fran's mom is a witch, her new friend Imogen is a Marovian (female vampire/Dark One) and Fran herself is a psychometrist. Plus she is surrounded by all the other members of the Goth Faire, all of the strange and just a little out there. Then she meets Imogene's brother Benidikt, who is a Dark One and claims that she is his Beloved. The only one who can save his soul and that they are destined to be together. It is right here, that the book could have made that sad, turn down Twilight lane and been all "Oh, we must be together forever" and "I can't exist without you". Thank God it did not.  First of all, Fran keeps calling Ben a Vampire, a term he dislikes. Secondly, she doesn't really believe in the whole "Beloved" thing. She wants to take it slow and just be friendly. Ben keeps stepping in to save and protect her and Fran keeps telling him to let her fight her own battles. It was wonderful!  I read both books fairly quickly, and will admit I thought the second one ended rather abruptly. It left me hanging and kind of wondering, "What the hell?" I didn't really feel that there was a natural conclusion to the situation and it felt both rushed and forced. I am hoping that when I start on In the Company of Vampires, set years later, it will resolve some of these feelings of "And???"

Prequel to "In the Company of Vampires." Not your ordinary vampire story.

Confessions of a Vampire's Girlfriend Author Katie MacAlister Copyright November 2010 Publisher New American Library I love Kate MacAlister's writing, and the title of this book intrigued me so much I took it out of the library. I've spent a day and a half reading it straight through. Fran and her Faire friends are out of this world. I love how she gets into and out of problems that she either fell into or innocently caused. I'm watching out for her next adventure since I know the author would not leave us hanging, wondering when Fran will take her relationship with Ben to the next level. Sometimes as a reviewer it's hard to write about the book you've just read and enjoyed. The words don't come and you still want to find a way to share your enjoyment of the story. I hope I've managed to do that in this case. FTC Full Disclosure: I borrow this book from the Queens County Library strictly for enjoyment and reviewing.
