Library Journal
In 1985 this group of artists shook up the refined New York art scene with posters decrying the lack of recognition and support afforded women artists. Under the headings "these galleries show no more than 10% women artists" and "which art mag was worst for women last year," the posters tacked up around town by the still-anonymous members have continued to name names and compile statistics that back up their assertions. While this may sound like politically correct moral coercion-the Guerrilla Girls have dubbed themselves "Conscience of the Art World"-their liberal use of humor and the simple and obvious truth of their claims make them the rightful, if unlikely, heiresses to Susan B. Anthony and Frida Kahlo alike. This volume offers a short history and analysis of their work, an honest and hilarious interview (with members identified by pseudonyms), and more than 50 pages reprinting their posters. While over the years feminist critiques and analyses of the arts have found their way into most library collections, this simple, direct documentation of the way the art business operates-and discriminates-is unique and should be placed in all academic and larger public libraries.-Eric Bryant, "Library Journal"
