Here, 37 modern Jewish poets, novelists and critics add their biblical interpretations to countless precedents in an uneven omnibus. ``At its most personal and contemporaneous, the collection soars,'' noted PW , singling out pieces by Max Apple, Anne Roiphe, Jay Neugeboren and Francine Prose. Thirty-seven Jewish-American writers interact with the various books of the Hebrew Bible, providing essays ranging from expositions of the text to reminiscences of an author's childhood. The essays that move close to the text are often insightful, illuminating both scripture and Bible characters. Other essays, in which literary imagination is given free rein, have less to offer those wishing to understand the text. These latter essays often say more about the author than the text. As an introduction to the Hebrew Bible this volume is disappointing at times. It is more effective as a window into the contemporary Jewish mind. Craig W. Beard, Harding Univ. Lib., Searcy, Ark.

YA The Jewish tradition of midrash, scholarly interpretation of the Bible, is carried on in a lively, compulsively read able fashion by 37 highly individualistic writers. The books of the Bible are exam ined in the light of contemporary experi ence, ancient scholarship, literary val ue, and divine revelation. The essays are in turn angry, joyous, sad, questioning, and humorous. Young people of any faith will gain a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the Bible. At the root of every essay, and of the book itself, is the absolute and passionate cer tainty that everything in life matters, a certainty sought by many of today's youth. Mary A. Williams, Harris County Public Library
