One Of The Best Releases and Artists Of 2011

Nailah Porter Releases Breathtaking Debut "ConJazzNess" on EmArcy/Universal Music Group

Former Washington, DC lobbyist/attorney, and now an accomplished modern jazz/soul vocalist, Nailah Porter releases her breathtaking debut recording, "ConJazzNess", (pronounced "consciousness"), on EmArcy Records, the label home of Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington, Max Roach, and Julian "Cannonball" Adderley. Porter's debut offers up ten thought provoking and socially conscious compositions backed by a stellar crew of jazz and soul musicians from the New York and Los Angeles underground scene.

When asked to describe her music, Nailah coined the phrase "ConJazzNess" ("it is rooted in spirit, and based on jazz"). Preferring to discuss what informs the music, Nailah recalls "the smell of hickory-smoked barbeque" of her hometown of Winston-Salem, North Carolina."the feel of cotton-pricked fingers" pinchin' her cheeks". and "the foot stomps and African vocal harmonies of the Elder's Choir at St. John CME Church."

As a lobbyist, Porter helped lay the foundation for the passage of major congressional legislations including the Brady Bill, the Hate Crimes Bill, the Assault Weapons Ban, and other public safety related measures-and at the pinnacle of her legal career, Nailah walked away from it all to pursue her dreams of singing jazz with a modern take, in the tradition of Nina Simone, Abbey Lincoln, Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday.

"ConJazzNess" is highlighted by "Sacred," Transcending," "Breathe," "Uncle Coo' Jack," and the transforming, "Lilies & Birds." Augmented by energetic modern-bop and groove arrangements, including lush strings and woodwinds, Porter delivers the melody from the depths of her soul, singing with an emotional passion rarely heard in modern jazz music.

"This is a really great voice, you need to remember the name.she's going to be around for some of THE discoveries of 2011." - Gilles Peterson, BBC Radio 1 Worldwide

"Nailah Porter is a true artist.a visionary whose music remains timeless and relevant."- Billy Childs, Guggenheim Fellow, and Grammy-Award Winning Artist-Pianist, Composer, Producer.

"I immediately was mesmerized by her beautiful tone, and unique phrasing.a soul in touch with the love, pain and emotional surrender that binds us all."- Guy Eckstine, Producer, A&R Executive, Manager

"A raw yet silken cross between Sarah Vaughan and Cassandra Wilson"- LA Weekly

"Nailah's voice is full of African American Dap and Reciprocity.her music is more than entertainment - it's the soundtrack for ceremonial living and doing the right thing."- Peter J. Harris, Author
