Children's Literature
This title in the "Rookie Read-About Geography" series examines the state of Connecticut. The first sentence of the book poses a question of interest to any child: "What state gave us the first lollipop?" After identifying where Connecticut is on the map of the United States and giving some basic statistics, the author describes the geography of the state, including the forests and lakes and the animals and plants that live there. Interesting sites to see, and a brief history beginning with the Algonquin tribes is included. Some of Connecticut's firsts, such as town libraries and newspapers, are listed and the major industries of Connecticut are described. A glossary of new words is made more interesting by thumbnail pictures of the book's illustrations. This is an excellent reference book for students seeking information about Connecticut. 2004, Children's Press, Ages 6 to 7.
