Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Donald R. Frey, MD (Creighton University Medical Center)
Description: This is the 53rd edition of what is arguably the most widely used reference on therapeutic advances in the treatment of disease. Thoroughly updated once again, it adds to the currency of every physician's database.
Purpose: The book continues to present the most current methods of management for a wide array of medical problems facing primary care physicians. Though it is impossible for any single text to keep up with every medical advance, this work comes closer than any to actually doing so.
Audience: It is written primarily for practicing physicians. However, all individuals involved in the day-to-day management of patients - or training to take up this management challenge - will find the book useful. The wide array of authors represent a broad cross section of medical scholars.
Features: The book presents medical management on a disease-by-disease basis. Each section involves the individualized method of the section author, and is nicely detailed yet poignant. This edition has been clearly updated, with 96 percent of the topics addressed by new authors. A section on herbal products is a timely plus. The book continues to add additional authors from outside the U.S., which lends a true sense of international flare to its offering.
Assessment: It is hard to find a better single volume that represents the overall state-of-the-art when it comes to medical management. With each passing year, Rakel's text changes in its detail, but its underlying relevance remains the same - it belongs on the shelf of every practicing physician.
