But in the aftermath of the Civil War, men like that are hard to come by, and when she finds ex-boxer Conor Branigan lying unconscious in the road, Olivia takes him in, even though the hard, brawling Irishman isn’t exactly what she had in mind, especially when he ignites a passion in her she’s never felt before.

Overview

Olivia Maitland needs a man. Determined to hang onto her family’s Louisiana farm no matter what, Olivia knows she needs a big, strong man to help her, a man who’s not afraid of hard work.
Conor knows what it’s like to pour all your hopes, dreams, and sweat into a piece of land only to have it come to nothing. He’d already seen his family destroyed and their lands taken during the Irish famine when he was a boy, and he has no intention of sticking around long enough to watch a corrupt man with power do the same thing to Olivia. But she and her three adopted daughters touch dreams in Conor he thought he’d forgotten long ago. Can he let go of the bitterness of his past and make a new future with Olivia? Can he believe in love again, or is it just too late for his cynical heart?

    This book is a keeper!

Out of all the books I've read by Laura Lee Guhrke, I can say this is my favorite and by far her best. It's one of her much earlier historical romantic novels. And I must say it is a fantastic story. It's not your average romance novel. It's got that extra oomph to make it great.

Conor Branigan is a damaged man. He's had a horrible up to this point. He's 36, something that takes him a moment to figure out. He's a loner and has no one and is running away from his memories. Olivia Maitland stumbles on him lying unconscious in the middle of a wet muddy road and she takes him home to give him aid. Slowly Conor's story comes out and it is heart breaking. But Olivia is up to the challenge of taking him on and their story shows the true meaning of love and time healing all wounds.

I really hope this book is reprinted soon. This book is definitely a keeper.

    Highly Recommended!

This is the first book I've read by this author and I will definitely be reading more of her wonderful writing. This is a touching, indepth story that develops the characters slowly, revealing their innermost qualities, fears, strengths, etc. It is a book I will keep to read again. It is very long, which makes it even better. GREAT!

    It was all right...

A lot more religion than I am used to in a novel. The story was classic, the hero's turnaround psychologically was too fast. Otherwise a pretty good novel.

    Heartfelt and touching love story

I absolutely loved Conor and Olivia's story! With both of them having suffered such deep sorrow and grief, it was wonderful how this story of love unfolded. I was so hooked into this book that the 901 pages flew by. A must read!

    Complex characters and plot

I really enjoyed this book set during the potato famine in Ireland. It is a book about healing and the ability of the human heart to find love even after the most horrific circumstances.
