From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble ReviewNo wonder Danny Seo is called “the eco-groovy Martha Stewart” -- his design tips make redecorating a smog-free breeze. His ideas for refurbishing the home are fresh and planet-friendly, with more than a dash of panache. In this book, he takes us through the steps of refreshing a typical home (his parents’) inexpensively and conscientiously. Room by room, Seo points out small ways we can upgrade, not only for ourselves but also for the earth.
Seo begins with a very necessary (for most of us) lesson on the art of purging. Before we start redecorating our homes, he notes, it’s imperative that we dredge the sediment from our lives -- as he did for his parents’ cluttered home. “Overaccessorised rooms are too busy, distracting, and unnerving to spend time in,” Seo notes sagely. “I made a list of everything in the home that could go -- to charity, the recycling center, or the landfill -- and spent two hours hauling everything.” Next, Seo tell us how we can update our walls, windows and floors with exciting, eco-friendly materials. Surprise! Seo points out that we can find funky, environmentally correct furnishings right on the Internet, all at a reasonable price. “All I had to do was type words like “hemp rug” or “bamboo blinds” into a web search engine, and I’d be offered a myriad of beautiful options,” Seo crows. “With the money I saved, I could indulge on custom upholstery and purchase handmade tiles for the bathroom.”
Seo goes on to detail what kinds of appliances and furnishings work best in an eco-friendly home: washing machines, refrigerators, and more. On top of all this, Seo explains how to find wooden furniture that’s cut and milled in a responsible way: “You can find sustainably harvested tropical woods in unexpected places. IKEA, for instance.” Who knew? Seo advises cool, affordable furnishings that don’t hurt the planet -- and with his guidance, readers can find ways to make their own homes more environmentally friendly. From the kitchen to the bedroom to the backyard and garden, Seo shows us how we can get our lives and homes into clean, healthy shape.
Like Seo’s other books, such as Heaven on Earth and Generation React, Conscious Style Home is written in clear, lively prose that’s actually fun to read. With lush photographs depicting Seo’s changes to his parents’ house, this book both delights and inspires. (Jesse Gale)
