Overview

LARGER PRINT Edition of BOOK #1 of the bestselling Consequences series:

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Aleatha Romig comes a suspenseful thriller about secrets and deception, passion and love, choices and consequences.

Every action has consequences.

Waking in an unfamiliar bedroom in a luxurious mansion, Claire Nichols is terrified to discover that a chance encounter led her into the cruel hands of her abductor, Anthony Rawlings. Claire has no understanding of why she's there, but it's been made abundantly clear-she is now his acquisition and every action has consequences.

Learn the rules to survive.

Facing incomprehensible circumstances, Claire must learn to survive her new reality-every aspect of her livelihood depends upon the tall, dark-eyed tycoon who is a true master of deception. Driven by unknown demons, he has no tolerance for imperfection, in any aspect of his life, including his recent acquisition. Anthony may appear to the world as a handsome, benevolent businessman, but in reality Claire knows firsthand that he's a menacing, controlling captor with very strict rules: do as you're told, public failure is not an option, and appearances are of the utmost importance.

Captivate the captor.

To fit together the pieces of the puzzle, Claire must follow his rules. Will her plan work, or will Anthony become enthralled by Claire's beauty, resilience, and determination, changing the game forever? If that happens, will either of them survive the consequences?

Nobody ever did or ever will escape the consequences of his choices.-Alfred A. Montapert

Editorial Reviews

Choice Book Reviews - Didi Hassan
This was a good book, a book that makes you think how strong the persuasive powers of control and dependency are to a person's well-being. There is a lot that goes on and I can probably write an essay about all the psychological implications they produce but I'll just say it's worth reading and hopefully there will be sequel.
Fiction Vixen Book Reviews - Jen Reviewer
Consequences isn’t what I would call a romance novel. There are sex scenes but they aren’t done in a typical romance way. For me, the book would be more of a psychological thriller or straight up suspense. The book is about one relationship, Tony and Claire, but it does not follow the typical relationship pattern. Bravo to Ms. Romig for shocking the heck out of me.

CONSEQUENCES is definitely a book you have to read. I hope it evokes the same crazy emotions in you that it did in me and you love it as much as I did!

    Ugh

Okay so I will be in the minority here. I did not give this book two stars because I am worried about women being dehumanized. This book was just flat out annoying do to the constant repetative slow chapters. The book dragged on and on. I skim through so much in the beginning do to it being so damn slow never missing a thing. Finally ended up going to chapter 40 to get to the point of the book and still skimmed. Finally the last two chapters getting to the meat of the book. So sad when a book has so much potential, but the author is forced to have so many words to create a book, therefore dragging a book out until it is beyond annoying.

Now, after saying all that, the last two chapters hooked me. Now I need to know what happens. I hope the second book isntnas annoying.

    Not what I was expecting.

Why is this book considered a thriller? To me, it was a long story about a man who beats and controls a woman and her falling in love with him. I was looking for a romantic thriller, instead I got disturbing book about rape and control.

    What a waste!

Ridulously long with a heroine in which you quickly lose respect--along with an unlikely ending that appears only to serve the author's purpose to get the reader to buy the next book in the series--pathetic! Very dissatisfying!

    OMG

OMG! This knocks your socks off. It is NOT romantic so if you have problems with rape or brutality DO NOT read the books. I have to point out one unbelievable point of this book. Prisoners of rapist dont have soft warm fuzzy feelings about the people who assist in the captivity. Whoever thought of that storyline is not of this world. My first thought was that whoever came in the room was gonna get a butt beating and instead the victim lovingly asked her to stay. Bull!

    Great book

There were few things that bothered me or maybe I should say disturb me, the mental and physical abuse that are part of the story. It is not for everyone to read but it is worth it and it will make you want to continue reading the sequel, Truth!

Very surprised at the overall ratings of this novel (the majority being 5 stars). If you enjoyed reading about an abusive and controlling relationship, then this book is for you. I really got tired of the repeated references to the couple's sexual encounters, many of which in the beginning were nothing more than rapes. The "heroine" is an abused and degraded victim who subsequently falls in "love" with her captor, a brutally sadistic and controlling psychopath. The ending makes absolutely no sense and leaves the reader wondering why the victim is further victimized. I kept reading, hoping the story would get better; unfortunately, it didn't.

    Not recommend

I thought this book was boring. It was pages and pages of the same thing over and over again. The same story could have been told in much less time. I'd like to know how it ends but I don't think I'll bother getting the next book.

This book was not what I expected! At first, I thought it was a simple story of a young woman overcoming obstacles, but as I started reading I realized it was so much more. At first, I didn't like the character of Tony and I thought Claire was weak, but as their story unfolded I realized Claire wasn't weak and I actually hated Tony. The story had twists and turns that couldn't be predicted by the reader and just when I thought I had it figured out...BAM, something unexpected happened. This is a great first novel by Aleatha Roming and I look forward to reading more of her work.

Takes woman back to cave man times

This story makes women seem weak and needing to be diminated by man. Im horrified that a woman wrote this! It's a love story about a woman who falls in love with a brutal abductor! She stays with him even though he beats her so bad she loses conciousness! What does this teach women in abusive relationships?

This is my first review but I felt like I had to say this. I am not against books on Stockholm syndrome, even though my review may seem that way. What I am against is this books character development.

The other reviews gave me seemingly high expectations for this book. However, I was disappointed. This is not at all a romance; it is dark. Stockholm syndrome seems to have exploded on these pages. The female protagonist, Claire, comes off as a strong character with her ability to utilize “a mask” when needed in different situation. As a reader I supported her ability to detach herself, for a time, from any given situation, just to survive it or avoid a negative consequence. However, that being said I ultimately found that her assumed ‘”strength” was just a “mask” as well. She was not strong. She became little more than a well-trained pet. Trained effectively through positive or negative reinforcement. She became dependent (much like a dog is dependent on its owner for food, shelter, warmth…). She was broken physically and emotionally and instead of fighting, she changes tactics and decides that what she really needs is Anthony. She was great before him. She was better before him. She was a truly strong woman before him who would not yield her safety, now she yields to his abuse hoping that she can fix him. She accepts his abuse and stops fighting for life, choosing instead to fight for a man who could kill her and no one would be able to do a thing (heck he almost did!). She is WEAK. She is BRAINWASHED. Claire would have thrived without him. Anthony was not a necessary element in her life, only necessary in the demise of her character, essentially everything that made her real and appealing to him in the first place.
She caved and did not stand up for herself. Even when a reader may think that she is “taking a stand” with him by confronting Anthony, all she is really doing is providing an explanation (excuse) for her actions. Silently and passively begging for forgiveness from her captor so she won’t receive his brand of punishment (which she will readily accept if he disagrees with her). Claire is broken. The gifts that Anthony gives Claire are horrible. She acts like he gave her the world. Giving someone something that already belongs to them, that you took in the first place, is not a glorious gift! It’s nothing more than returning stolen property. He took it before he gave it. Also allowing time with family is not a gift. Essentially, if he had not removed her from her family and forcefully took her life and possessions away he would have nothing to give back to her. She would/should have all of these “gifts” had it not been for Anthony in the first place. Had he not kidnapped and brainwashed her. She had the makings of a happily independent woman but he stole that too and convinced her that she never wanted it

He spoke again as if he hadn’t just shattered his promise and her security. Her house of glass now lay in a pile of shards.”

Consequences by Aleatha Romig is the first book in the Consequences series. I'm trying to write this review while its still fresh in mind after completing it just a few hours ago. Of course, I needed a little to mentally recover from this read. Aleatha Romig had me hooked from the beginning. This was a dark, thrilling adventure. I say adventure because it definitely took me through all the emotions, angry, disgusted, elated, sad, and bewildered. Clair Nichols is a young woman whom lost her dream job of being a meteorologist and finds herself down on her luck working as a bartender. She meets Anthony Rawlings, a successful charming businessman. To Anthony appearances are of the utmost importance. A signature on a napkin entangles Claire in an unfamiliar contract resulting in Claire waking up in her prison. Her prison consists of her suite in Anthony's mansion. Claire is given a lists of rules she must follow in order to escape her prison and public failure is not an option. In order to survive each day Claire has to put on her mask each day and compartmentalize her situation. Claire has few freedoms, but even more limitations involving no access to telephones or computers. Clair begins to captivate her captor, and unbeknownst may start to have feelings for this man. Or is Claire just playing her part a little too well? Claire quickly learns each action has consequences.

"To say he was cruel would not explain what she endured. One could say demanding, aggressive, abrasive, controlling-but above all, brutal."

    Difficult but worth it

There were several times I wanted to quit reading simply because the subject matter is very controversial, but I'm glad I stuck to the end. I will be reading the next book. This book does contain rape and is overall very demeaning to women.
