About the Author

Dr. Hyde obtained his BA in Biology from Florida State University and his DC degree from Logan College. He completed a 2-week sports medicine internship program at the USOC and served as the chiropractor for the 1986 Pan American Games. In his career, Dr. Hyde has worked on athletes around the world in many different sports. He was a chiropractic consultant to the Miami Dolphins for 7 years, as well as a chiropractic consultant for several high schools and universities. Dr. Hyde continues to lecture around the world and consults with athletes and healthcare providers treating athletes.

Marianne S. Gengenbach, DC, DACBSP is a graduate of Logan College of Chiropractic and has served the Chiropractic Profession for 24 years. A former Associate Professor and Director of Clinical Education at Logan College, she became a Diplomate of the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians in 1994 and continues to teach sports injuries management at the postgraduate level. Her interest in conservative management of sports injuries dates back to her days as a student, and she proceeded to specialize in sports injuries from her first day in practice. Along with other notable chiropractic physicians, including co-editor Thomas Hyde, she helped shape current education and certification in sports injuries management for the chiropractic profession, and continues in part-time practice in Florida. She served in various capacities on what is now known as the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians from 1981-1994, and became the first woman to serve as its President from 1988-1992. She has written numerous publications in addition to helping edit the first edition of Conservative Management of Sports Injuries, including the translation and editing of German chiropractic publications for American release.

This book emphasizes a conservative approach to the management of sports-related injuries. It is specifically geared toward the chiropractic profession, so it places emphasis upon manipulative interventions, along with other forms of conservative care. It is organized into four general sections. The first provides a general overview of a conservative approach to sports injuries management. The second section, which forms the core of the text, examines site-specific sports injuries, organized regionally by body area. Each chapter in this section provides a comprehensive look at the types of injuries that may occur in that area, along with recommendations for appropriate therapeutic intervention. The third section examines the special considerations of the female athlete and the young and old athlete, while the final section looks at significant issues in sports medicine. This latter section has chapters on diagnostic imaging, thermal imaging, strength and conditioning, nutrition and steroid use. The book is designed to provide an opportunity for any healthcare practitioner, regardless of specialty, to explore the possible use of conservative management in the treatment and rehabilitation of the injured athlete. This is primarily directed at chiropractors interested in sports medicine, but it is also of interest to anyone who desires information concerning the conservative care of the injured athlete. This could include medical physicians, osteopaths, physical therapists, and certified trainers. Students will also find much of interest in the book. The book is filled with hundreds of well drawn illustrations and photographs. These help to illustrate key concepts, and todemonstrate therapeutic interventions. This is truly a comprehensive overview of sports chiropractic and conservative care for the injured athlete. The main part of the book, dealing with site-specific injuries, contains a wealth of information for the interested reader. The material is conservative in nature, and is based upon the available evidence. This section presents information on both diagnosis and therapy, as well as epidemiological information pertaining to various kinds of injuries. This is core material for the sports chiropractor. I suspect that this will become the base chiropractic text for sports injury management. It is an essential book.
