Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
The third book of this series begins with Cal's unexpected rescue from his peril on the rail track by a strange man who loosened a drain cover so he could fall through. Repro takes him to his lair in the rocks. The entrance is hidden behind abandoned file cabinets. After spending several days recovering from his injuries, Cal is on the run again. He makes contact with a hospice nurse who has a memory stick of his dad's, but she doesn't have it with her. In the process he gets bitten by a deadly snake and must make his way to the lab to give himself a shot of the correct antibiotic. He and Repro break into a house to steal the Ormond Riddle, but he doesn't read it in this month. Written in journal format, each entry begins with a location, a date and a time. A man in a pickup offers Cal a ride and they are bashed from behind by some thugs who cause the truck to topple down a hill into a river. This episode ends with Cal holding the driver's head out of the water as the villains are racing down the hill toward him. Nine sequels follow, taking Cal through this terrifying year. Teen readers will likely overlook the absurdity of the unrealistic aspects of the plot and enjoy the fast-paced action.
