    Evangelism outside of the box

I first heard about this book from my friend Tony Turner, a minister in Springfield, MO, who is in the process of starting up a new church. The basic premise of this book is that evangelical Christians tend to go about sharing their faith the wrong way. Instead of trying to beat people over the head with truths that they might not be open to hearing, the author suggests peforming acts of kindness for people as a way to get them to open up and be sensitive to the Holy Spirit. The author does a good job of noting that the acts of kindness are not the end of the game, but rather the entry point to get people to discuss spiritual things. And the suggestions are pretty simple really, ranging from offering free car washes (actually free, no donations accepted) to handing out water or sodas in parks frequented by joggers to gift wrapping at the mall during the Holidays to offering to walk people to their cars with umbrellas when it is raining at the grocery store. In the author's experience, these are basic, simple things that anyone can do, no matter how fearfull they feel about sharing the Gospel. In fact, he calls himself a 'coward' more than once to represent that he really isn't anything special in this regard. Personally, I think the idea has merit, but it is different enough than traditional evangelism methods that I could see a lot of mainstream churches having trouble with it. Still, if starting up a new ministry, this isn't a bad way at all of spreading the word and trying to bring the Word of Christ to more people. Which is kind of the point, really.
