All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Resident rebel of American Idol season four, Constantine Maroulis always seemed more comfortable with posing than rocking, which made him the perfect rocker for a prefabricated pop show. He was playing a part, a criticism leveled by the perennially sage Simon Cowell, who nevertheless failed to realize that Constantine's fans kind of liked that theatrical phoniness -- after all, anybody who watches Idol doesn't really care whether one of the show's rockers is genuine or not, especially in those days before DAUGHTRY. Constantine's fans liked him -- some ironically, some not -- and like anybody riding the wave created by his own personality, Constantine tried to move into TV first, attempting a sitcom where he played a lovable rocker next door, a project that was scrapped before it reached the air, but he managed to capture a similar role on The Bold and the Beautiful, with his first episodes on the soap appearing around the time his first album was released in August 2007. Although it appeared on an indie called 6th Place Records a winking acknowledgment of his placing on AmIdol, Constantine attempts to capture the same kind of mass audience that Maroulis had on the show, as Constantine tries to be everything to everyone on this endearingly ridiculous album. Far from finding a sound and sticking to it, Maroulis tries on personas as if they were second-hand clothes, beginning with the warmed-over Enrique Iglesias of "Girl Like You," then quickly discarding that for a slinky "Several Thousand" styled after Maroon 5, then suddenly sliding into churning post-grunge for "Child of the Revolution," and even dabbling in the Strokes in "I Thought It Was Something," mashing together "Last Night" and "Someday!" That's just scratching the surface of Constantine's spirited genre-hopping here -- there are ballads and skipping pop songs like the terrifically funny breakup song "Favorite T-Shirt," where he reclaims the garment and his Purple Rain record, too -- and while his pandering is transparent, it's also kind of charming, because he makes no apologies for gunning for any kind of hit at all. It also doesn't hurt that the songs are good pieces of pure pop product -- the kind of shameless professional bandwagon-jumping that's not all that common in modern pop in the 2000s. They're not great songs, but they're catchier and cleverer than they have any right to be, and Constantine tears into them with the hammy music theater gusto that distinguished his Idol performances. All this adds up to the rare American Idol-related album: one that delivers exactly upon the promise a contestant showed on the show, since it plays to his strengths as a performer, not what might show up on the radio or not. And let's face it: there's no place on the radio for a record as slickly calculated as this -- it's so calculated, it misses any specific demographic! -- but for those who loved Constantine on American Idol, this will be the guilty pleasure of the year.

    Great album

Like many other fans, I'm sure, I've been waiting for Constantine's album. I loved Constantine on American Idol, I loved him in concert - he was the show stopper. Although I've always loved "Knights on Broadway" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" I loved Constantine's versions best. They're on my MP3 player. I told my daughter I'm in love. Being married, I scared her. But then I ammended my comment that I'm in love with Constantine's song "So Long".

    Excellent!

I couldn't wait to get this. I absolutely love it. Every song is different. Constantine has done it! He's made a cd that you will want listen to... every single song and you will not push the skip button. "Fading into you" is a beautiful song and he sings it beautifully. The "T-Shirt song" is going to be a fun hit. Kids, teens and adults will love it. "Midnight Radio" was made for him... incredible. "So Long" is amazing, a #1 for sure. Constantine has an incredible vocal range. The only problem with the cd is I wish there were more!!! I can't wait for the next one

I have anxiously awaited Constantine's debut CD since his deparature from American Idol. He did not disappoint me in the least. The vocals are stellar. Constantine proves on this CD that he can perform music from a variety of genres. Fadint Into You, Child You're The Revolution and Heaven Help The Lonely are my favorite tracks.

“Constantine,” the long-awaited debut CD from Constantine Maroulis, is a multifaceted gem. Much like the man himself, this album cheerfully defies attempts to be categorized by any narrow definition, embracing an eclectic variety of material that effectively showcases his vocal versatility and remains endlessly entertaining from beginning to end. Drawing you in immediately with the irresistibly catchy hook of “Girl Like You,” “Constantine” offers up an appealing musical banquet that features his first single, “Everybody Loves,” a joyous summertime tune that clings happily to your brain like a musical bumper sticker and defies you not to sing along. Several diverse ballads entice the ears with thoughtful lyrics and finely-crafted melodies brought beautifully to life through the golden tones of Constantine’s voice and the strong backing of his talented band. The lovely “Fading Into You” is a particular standout here, as well as the delicate simplicity of “Several Thousand” and the raw emotion gently infusing “Sister Sister” reaching out to touch your heart. One of Constantine’s great skills as a performer is his expert ability to interpret stories through song, and his album does a nice job of capturing a bit of his seductive charisma. Things get even more tasty as he tosses in a little spice, with the rockin’ raucousness of “Child, You’re the Revolution ” and “I Thought It Was Something, “a playful romp riding on an edgy, Iggy Pop-ish vibe. Also of note is the sly humor of the original composition, “Favorite T-shirt,” a tongue-in-cheek nod to a love affair gone wrong. Sprinkled throughout the album can be found all manner of subtle musical touches, adding a certain richness to each and every song. It all builds up to a strong finish, featuring the delightful “Heaven Help the Lonely,” and finally closing with the powerful anthem “Midnight Radio,” from “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.” Here Constantine both pays homage to his theatre roots as well as taking advantage of the opportunity to truly demonstrate the range of his impressive vocal power. It is no mistake that “Midnight Radio” is so often the song that triumphantly concludes his amazing live performances. Yes, this album would be a precious jewel in anyone’s music collection, as “Constantine” really shines.

If He'd Been Give A Free Ride...

If he'd been given a free ride like some others on Idol, he could have done even better. So glad I've followed his career. So glad I got this CD. I don't love everything on there, but I like a lot of it and I admire his versatility, the glimpse of his fun side, the risks he takes. Buy it.

    At Long Last!

I am SO happy to finally have a Constantine CD! Constantine Maroulis was my pick to win American Idol during Season Four, and I have been eagerly anticipating his album since then. How pleased I am to find that I enjoy every single one of the tracks on this CD! I loved his versatility on the show, and it is very apparent on "Constantine" also. The variety of different styles of songs on this CD is impressive. Constantine Maroulis is truly a virtuoso and shows the full range of his talent and musical interests on this album. It's great to see that a few of the songs were penned by him too! My favorite songs so far are So Long, Fading Into You and Midnight Radio. However, this is like picking a favorite child. They are all favorite for one reason or another. I find myself singing along to each one of them, and I cannot WAIT to hear the first single, Everybody Loves, on the radio some time soon. Congrats, Constantine, on a masterpiece! Definitely well worth the wait!

Each one of the tracks on the album could be a radio hit! The album really showcases really his powerful vocals and brings out his incredible talent. Some of my favorite tracks include heaven help the lonely, so long, several thousand, and fading into you. It's what I was waiting for, a true masterpiece!

If these previews are an indication of the quality of the music that Constantine Maroulis is capable of producing, I say...hooray for the 'Indie' Idol pop/rocker/businessman! His vocals are powerful and convincing, the tunes unique and the backing music is 'a point'--neither under nor over- done. Constantine's debut ROCKS the heart and soul of this theater geek!
