More About This Textbook

Overview

CONSTITUTIONAL LAW: Principles and Policies continues to serve as an incomparably clear introduction to both doctrine and policy in its Third Edition.

This highly successful student treatise offers distinct advantages:

  • thorough treatment of all areas of constitutional law covered in both beginning and advanced courses
  • direct, unambiguous identification of the issues
  • takes a neutral approach that examines all sides of constitutional law debates
  • presents both the doctrines and the underlying policy issues of the law, unlike many other texts which emphasize one or the other
  • flexible organization allows the chapters to be used in any order

For the Third Edition, the author:

  • updates the entire text, with new material introduced throughout
  • pays special attention to developments between editions, particularly in regard to presidential power in the war on terrorism, the many decisions concerning state sovereign immunity, the controversial rulings concerning the takings clause, the important decisions concerning affirmative action by colleges and universities, and significant developments concerning the Establishment Clause (such as the approval of vouchers and the Ten Commandments decisions)
  • covers the most recent and significant cases, among them Hamdi v. Rumsfeld (executive power to detain enemy combatants), Nevada Department of Human Resources v. Hibbs and Tennessee v. Lane (sovereign immunity), Gonzales v. Raich (CongressÂżs ability to prohibit possession and cultivation of marijuana for medicinal purposes), City of New London, Connecticut v. Kelo (takings clause), Grutter v. Bollinger and Gratz v. Bollinger (equal protection), Lawrence v. Texas (sexual privacy), and Zelman v. Simmons-Harris (vouchers)

    A Law Student Must-have

Any law student with half a brain will buy this treatise. I attended the Harvard Law School, and this book saved my life in both Constitutional Law and my advanced constitutional law courses. Although Professor Chemerinsky has a progressive spin to his text, the book is well-balanced overall. Highly recommended.

AVOID RENTING FROM BARNES AND NOBLE AT ALL COSTS

i thought i'd save a little money and try renting from barnes and noble, but it was a BIG MISTAKE. The book i received was in TERRIBLE condition--think bent pages, ripped cover, writing/underlining that made the text illegible. Also, when I called to complain, they said my only option was to return it. They were absolutely unwilling to do anything to make the matter right, such as sending me a better copy or crediting back a portion of what I paid under the assumption the book was in adequate condition. For a large company, I would expect better customer service. There are better places to shop, I recommend you stick to the competition and do NOT waste your time/money dealing with Barnes and Noble rentals.

This is the best supplement for any con law class

All of my friends and I ended up buying this book by the end of our Constitutional Law class. It explains everything in a clear, understandable way -- and uses the major cases that are in every casebook.

Buy this book now, read the sections that correspond to the assigned reading, as you move through the semester, and be ahead of the game -- rather than buying it at the end (which nearly everyone does) and rushing to catch up before the final. Trust me. It's worth it.
