Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
Four kittens dressed in bib overalls with a hole in the back for their tails travel in two trucks to a construction site. Once there they don their hard hats which have slits for their ears to poke through. They climb into a loader, an excavator, a dump truck, and a backhoe. They dig and move dirt all morning. After a lunch of tasty sardines and cool milk, they rest. One reads a book, another listens to music through headphones, one is apparently working a crossword puzzle in a newspaper, and the fourth kitten just sleeps. In the afternoon they work in a crawler, a dozer, a grader, and a roller. When the sun is low it is time to go. A children's playground has been completed. The kitties drive back home. Colorful illustrations feature large, well defined images which compliment the brief text. The front endpapers show the large construction equipment with the worker kitties. The back endpapers feature lots of kittens enjoying the playground. Sure to be a favorite with youngsters who like to visit or contemplate construction sites. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
School Library Journal
PreS—The Sturges-Halpern team is back with another pitch-perfect title for construction-loving preschoolers. The bright, thickly lined illustrations are easy to see from a distance, and the repetitive dirt-moving and hard-hat-donning begs for audience involvement. In addition to getting little ones up and moving, this book also subtly incorporates important language comprehension into the text by emphasizing the difference between the prepositions "into" and "onto." This is sure to be a hit with youngsters.—Jenna Boles, Washington-Centerville Public Library, OH
Kirkus Reviews
Who's ready for a day of work in the sun? Construction Kitties! "The sun is up. Time for work. Construction Kitties grab their hats." Four kitties of various shades don their construction hats (one of which is pink) and head off for the construction site. "Into the dump truck. Onto the backhoe. Move that dirt!" They work until the sun is high, and then they break for lunch. With full tummies they rest, and then it's back to work. "Into the grader. Onto the roller. Smooth that dirt!" When the sun is low, their project is done. Construction Kitties have built a playground! They hop in their trucks and head out over the long highways home. "Construction Kitties purr and sing to the music. Soon it will be time to play!" Though Sturges' text is a little flat, young construction-machine fans can't but love seeing their favorite machines in action. Halpern lends her signature bright, blocky and perky heavy-lined, full-bleed illustrations to the package. A good addition to construction-machine collections everywhere. (Picture book. 2-5)
