Overview

Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) is the sensation of an unwanted sound in one or both ears in the absence of any outside auditory stimulus. Millions of people experience it-most for a lifetime. There is help for tinnitus sufferers. This book reveals what is available and how to help yourself and how to get help. In the US alone over 50 million people have tinnitus, twelve million of whom seek help due to its severity. Two million patients are so debilitated by it that they cannot function in daily life because of its annoyance. Tinnitus is considered a significant contributor to depression, anxiety, fear and even emotional instability for some. Tinnitus sufferers should receive a thorough evaluation from an audiologist and otologist. This book tells you what to expect. Sufferers need to understand the mechanisms of tinnitus and its likely causes. This book explains them. They need to understand treatment options. This book describes them.

As patients will discover between the covers of this book, 70% of people who suffer from tinnitus can usually be helped, some dramatically, by many of a wide variety of treatment options. The best investment patients can make is knowledge. This was the seed that led to the creation of this book. There are many things readers can do. The way in which one addresses life itself may influence how well one manages tinnitus. Everybody's coping mechanism is different. Some people never make the effort to search for relief while others are driven to find help, spending thousands of dollars for a "cure" that never comes. This book provides many options on how readers can approach tinnitus to find relief, and it guides them through theseapproaches.

Readers will learn about the many common causes of tinnitus; understand the common reactions and problems faced by other tinnitus sufferers; learn how tinnitus is likely represented in the nervous system including the brain; discover different ways they can change their reaction to tinnitus; learn how hearing loss and communication difficulties are related to tinnitus; read about how tinnitus affects sleep and what can be done about it; they'll find out ways to increase the quality of their life by taking charge; they'll discover sound therapies that work and dispel the myths and learn what to expect from their physician and other healthcare professionals; facts about herbs, supplements and alternative medicines will be unveiled; readers will understand their reaction to loud sounds (hyperacusis) and discover how tinnitus fits into their total emotional and spiritual life; and they'll find where else help is available.

Dr. Tyler has gathered professionals from around the world including New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Sweden and the United States. These are world leaders on tinnitus who have devoted much of their career to helping sufferers. They include audiologists, physicians, psychologists, therapists and researchers. Each contributed a chapter in their specialty area of tinnitus. For sufferers, reading this book will be like sitting down with these experts in their home and listening to their wisdom gained from many years of work and research. Tinnitus and the reactions people have to it is complex, but this book explains these simply, supported with drawings.

Editorial Reviews

Reviewer: Martin J Audiffred, M.S.(Louisiana Department of Health & Hospitals)
Description: This handbook provides an excellent overview of the different components of tinnitus. Each chapter is written by an author with expertise in that particular topic in the field of tinnitus.
Purpose: In addition to information about the different components of tinnitus, this book also provides recommendations/references of where to retrieve more specific information.
Audience: Although designed for readers who have or are interested in tinnitus, the book would be beneficial for professionals who are managing people with tinnitus.
Features: The handbook is very complete in providing information on the possible causes of tinnitus, the anatomy of hearing, and different strategies to help patients manage tinnitus. One of the nice features of this handbook is that a number of the authors provide lists for the consumer to use to address certain aspects of tinnitus.
Assessment: Patients should find this handbook useful, but it would be even more useful if the professionals who are helping the patients have a copy, so they can provide guidance in using it.
From The Critics
This comprehensive text delves into the world of tinnitus, discussing its possible causes, and explaining treatment options that may provide relief to sufferers. A great reference for healthcare professionals and a beneficial guide for those who know tinnitus first-hand.
