Description: This is a concise review of the field of allergic, contact, and occupational dermatitis. It is an update of the 2002 edition.
Purpose: According to the authors, the aim is to provide clinicians with a user-friendly book for everyday practice. These worthy objectives are, for the most part, met.
Audience: It is written for practitioners, primarily in dermatology, although it would be of use to allergists as well.
Features: The book begins with a description of allergic as well as irritant dermatitis and then has a valuable chapter that describes how to evaluate patients with contact dermatitis and when this diagnosis should be considered. There is a section on the practical aspects of patch testing. Individual allergens are then explained as well as where they are found. Other sections cover occupational dermatitis, contact urticaria, and patch testing in children. What is best about the book is its concise nature, which truly makes it easy to use in daily practice. However, this is its shortcoming, as it is impossible to explain every aspect of the topic in detail. There are several valuable unique features, such as a patient history and physical exam form, highlighted clinical pearls, illustrative tables, and high quality photographs. The most useful table is the one describing commonly held misconceptions about allergic contact dermatitis, as these misconceptions are not only held by patients, but often by physicians as well.
Assessment: This is a concise reference that can be used a "first touch" when looking up a topic in contact dermatitis. As opposed to other books in the field, it is very easy to use and is written in a readable and organized manner. Even though I am familiar with this area, I find some of the more encyclopedic books on contact dermatitis difficult to read.

This multifaceted book provides in-depth information on the evaluation of the patient with contact dermatitis, or cutaneous allergy, with an emphasis on the use of patch testing. In addition, it includes several chapters dedicated to occupational skin diseases. The book intends to provide the reader with all the information needed to evaluate the patient with a contact dermatitis or occupational dermatosis. These are worthy objectives given the large number of patients that dermatologists see daily who suffer from these debilitating disorders. The intended audience includes dermatologists, allergists, and physicians practicing occupational medicine. The book features an excellent introduction to allergic and irritant dermatitis, and also provides excellent evaluation protocols. Several chapters that specifically detail allergens are uniquely grouped by the tray in which they are found in the patch test. Each important allergen is grouped in concise tables providing common names, uses in products, and prevention of allergy. Throughout the book, the authors highlight key concepts that are insightful and useful to the clinician. This second edition provides the most recent updates and advances in the rapidly evolving field of contact dermatitis and occupational skin disease. It is a necessary addition to the library of any clinician who deals with these common and frustrating dermatologic diseases.
