Exciting!

This book held my attention from the beginning to the cliff hanger ending! I cannot wait for the next book in this amazing trilogy. Emily Goodwin is a master of creating well developed characters with whom readers become emotionally involved. Don't miss this book!

I loved this book! I must admit that I'm not usually into readi

I loved this book! I must admit that I'm not usually into reading books about zombies, but I had read Emily Goodwin's other book, Unbound, and I enjoyed it so much that I was eager to read this book. This book is, most assuredly, captivating, to say the least. The plot and characters are very well-developed. I am so excited to see what's in store in the second book! I can't wait!

Zombies are normally my thing, but I came across the author's FB

Zombies are normally my thing, but I came across the author's FB page for this series and was interested because of all the good reviews people were posting. And, let me tell you, I can see why. The characters were very well developed, the plot was unpredictable and the action was nonstop. I was holding my breath, turning page after page many times. There was a little bit of underlying romance between two of the main characters that I absolutely loved. I'd guess zombie books are normally all action, but was very character driven. It ended on a HUGE cliff hanger and I cannot wait until the second book comes out!! I HIGHLY recommend, even if you don't like zombies, you'll be surprised by this book!

Ok I have found a minded spirit in a writer by the name of Emily

Ok I have found a minded spirit in a writer by the name of Emily Goodwin.  I just finished the most fabulous book in a long time.  Contagious (The Contagium Trilogy).  She was able to tap into me a bring many and I mean many emotions.  A very thrilling roller coaster ride that had me screaming out and then bawling like a big giant baby.  This is first book that I got into emotionally to become fully vested since I first read Twilight books when the first came out.  In my opinion she has replaced that series in my mind.  Following the adventures of Orrisa as she searches for hope.  She proves a woman can be jut as kick-ass as men and not have supernatural powers.  Looking no drooling or the next book to come out.  Recommend you read his but have kleenex on hand 50 stars not only 5.

Great suspense.

This book captured my interest from the very first page. Emily Goodwin creats characters that you can form a connection with. She is able to create a story where are at the edge of your seat trying to find out what comes next. I will say that Emily Goodwin is now on my list of favorite authors. Great book, and excited for the next one in the trilogy and find out more about Orissa.

Terrific action

This is a pretty dang good book. I was pretty excited to start reading it, I love a good zombie apocalypse. But I have to be honest with you – for a good portion of the story, I didn’t like the main character, Orissa. I kind of felt like she was a bit over the top, a little manipulative, and I felt like we knew she was coming around 5 minutes beforehand because her ego arrived first. It’s not like I wanted her to get eaten by the zombies, because I needed her alive to save these other characters who needed her. But come on, Orissa, you are not the most awesomest on the planet! Or are you?

But then she kind of grew on me. I began to like her and her tough attitude. She proved herself time and again that she had the walk to back up the talk. There’s still a whole lot that I don’t know about her. This girl has a lot of secrets. But she is not a cold and calculating woman, she is a woman who has a checkered past with people she cares about out there in the world. And she’s now got a handful of them to protect.

If there is one thing that I’ve learned from any zombie apocalypse – stay out of the hospital. Especially as a patient, if you can help it. It signs your death warrant. So when sexy blue eyed Dr. Padraic Sheehan protects a bunch of “expendable” people by hiding them in the basement, he earns a spot in my favorites book. Even if he does start to irritate me a little bit later. He’s a good guy, and he deserves to be happy.

And the rest of Orissa’s group is as varied as can be. But I like them, for the most part. Her BFF, Raeya, is fantastical. Zoe can melt your heart. And well, Argos is the man’s best friend I’d love to acquire when the time comes. But then…. (cue sexy music) Hayden enters her life.

The man is military…well, ex military now. But he is stacked. He is smart. He is sexy. Of course. And the sexual tension between Orissa and Hayden is so thick you could suffocate. I love him. And oddly enough, he makes me like Orissa more. I don’t know how. Maybe he brings out her caring side a bit more, softens her. He makes her more real to me. I love the way they silently and maybe even subconsciously seek each other out and find a way to be near and touching. It’s very warm and endearing in such bleak times. And this is without a kiss or sexual encounter. Sometimes your heart just knows.

It’s a bit crazy that a book can have a good mix of horror, action, drama, emotion, and yes – sexual tension. But it does. It took me a minute to really get into it. But once I did I couldn’t put it down. A lot of the book kind of felt frantic, and of course, if it was real life (it will be one day), it would feel frantic. So that part I was really digging. There are some very cool fight scenes and action sequences, something the special effects junkie in me would love to see on screen. I definitely think this is a book to add to your zombie collection. It’s one of those books that left me cussing a whole stream of expletives much to violent for the likes of Fictional Candy.

And so I bought book two in the Contagium Trilogy, Deathly Contagious.

Must read!

My first zombie book, hooked from the beginning! Full of excitement and twists and turns. Couldnt put it down. Emily's writing sucks you right in. I cant wait for the rest of the trilogy!

I can't give this post-apocalyptic story six stars but I wish I

I can't give this post-apocalyptic story six stars but I wish I could! This is not a re-read, it's too harrowing a tale for me, but I cannot wait to read book #2! This author falls under the "Narrative-voice-I-love-to-read" category squarely. Goodwin has an almost conversational style to her writing that makes the reader feel like their intimate friend is regaling tales with the highest degree of excitement and tension available. Goodwin can also write an almost movie-like action scene. I see the blood and gore spatter, I hear the heroine's heartbeat race as she tries to escape and rescue those she should, and shouldn't.

I feel her pain.

Yes, Goodwin's that good. I "know" Orissa, I want to help her. As a reader, that's a connection that's not usually there. I read all the time and strictly for in-and-out entertainment value. But once in awhile, there's a story that feels so real you're sure it actually transpired. I love zombie tales, as a writer of four myself, so I was reading with a semi-critical eye and loved the spin she put on this post-apocalyptic work. It's so interesting with its believable war elements, the different stages of "zombieism," and the tension of survival and romantic suspense interspersed that I could not stop reading! Those readers that are bored with a single-dimension zombie tale will enjoy the following elements that are cleverly woven into Contagious: militaristic, romantic suspense, action, survivalist (think Hunger Games) and sci-fi. This is "so much" more than a zombie novel. It's a flat-out great read.

Orissa gets her appendix removed and wakes up to discover a nightmare out of a movie: a terrible contagion has been loosed on the populace for reasons yet undisclosed. While recovering she must battle to escape the immediate threat and take all those that she can save with her. Orissa has a secret though: she's a tough, highly trained fighter and survivalist. She's brave beyond compare, unflinching beyond compromise, tender near her heart and brutally honest about who she is.

Loved her.

When all hope is lost and Orissa thinks the end is near, a story arc occurs that makes the novel jump from really good to AMAZING. Period. I loved the gear switch and everything that followed.

This story flirts with being a Mature YA but should be just fine for readers 16+. I've recommended it to all four of my sons. If they can put this book down, I'll eat my hat.
