Overview

From the acclaimed author of Infected comes an epic and exhilarating story of humanity’s secret battle against a horrific enemy.

Across America, a mysterious pathogen transforms ordinary people into raging killers, psychopaths driven by a terrifying, alien agenda. The human race fights back, yet after every battle the disease responds, adapts, using sophisticated strategies and brilliant ruses to fool its pursuers. The only possible explanation: the epidemic is driven not by evolution but by some malevolent intelligence.

Standing against this unimaginable threat is a small group, assembled under the strictest secrecy. Their best weapon is hulking former football star Perry Dawsey, left psychologically shattered by his own struggles with this terrible enemy, who possesses an unexplainable ability to locate the disease’s hosts. Violent and unpredictable, Perry is both the nation’s best hope and a terrifying liability. Hardened CIA veteran Dew Phillips must somehow forge a connection with him if they’re going to stand a chance against this maddeningly adaptable opponent. Alongside them is Margaret Montoya, a brilliant epidemiologist who fights for a cure even as she reels under the weight of endless horrors.

These three and their team have kept humanity in the game, but that’s not good enough anymore, not when the disease turns contagious, triggering a fast countdown to Armageddon. Meanwhile, other enemies join the battle, and a new threat — one that comes from a most unexpected source — may ultimately prove the most dangerous of all.

Catapulting the reader into a world where humanity’s life span is measured in hours and the president’s finger hovers over the nuclear button, rising star Scott Sigler takes us on a breathtaking, hyper-adrenalized ride filled with terror and jaw-dropping action. Contagious is a truly grand work of suspense, science, and horror from a new master.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Alien invaders threaten humanity in Sigler's over-the-top thriller, the sequel to Infected. In the near future, U.S. president John Gutierrez goes straight from his inauguration to crisis management when his national security team informs him that he must focus his attention on Project Tangram, a secret government program to stave off an epidemic caused by alien parasites, which form itchy blue triangular patches on the skin. Victims eventually become paranoid and violent. As the infestation spreads, Gutierrez must decide whether the outbreak can be contained without the use of tactical nukes on American soil. Meanwhile, the creatures responsible for the parasites get a foothold in Michigan through a seven-year-old girl, who manifests possession by drawing blue triangles on her dolls. While lacking the psychological sophistication of Jack Finney's The Body Snatchers or David Gerrold's War Against the Chtorr series, this page-turner builds inexorably to an explosive ending. 5-city author tour.(Jan.)

    Need Better Copy

I had bought this ebook and after 180+ pages I realized that the entire book was out of order. I was reading part of the beginning then the end and then the middle. I was like what is going on? So I wish there had been a better copy instead of wasting $9.99.

Don't purchase if you use a Nook

I read his first book, "Infected". I liked it so I purchased this sequel which is over 500 pages long. After about a hundred pages things started making no sense as if I must have missed things in the reading. One character was at first a good guy then 20 pages later he was one of the bad guys. People who were main characters were suddenly dead with no explanation at all on how they died. I finally got to around page 200 and the dead people were now alive once more. I finally figured out that the chapters were not placed in the right order and that I wasn't a stupid as I thought. I really would like to get my money back for this book but I'm pretty sure I'm just out of luck.

an action-packed thriller reminiscent of the INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS

The transition of power is ending with the inauguration of the new American president, but not long after taking his oath of office, John Gutierrez is briefed by CIA Deputy Director Murray Longworth about his biggest issue: alien parasites. John initially believes Murray is telling a sick joke, but quickly realizes that the top secret Project Tangram is his most important program. An alien virus has infected Americans causing blue triangular lesions to erupt on the skin; these intrusions are sentient, causing their host to go insane before they break out from the body turning into pyramid creatures that share a singular strategic goal of building a path to somewhere that is assumed dangerous to humanity.

It is Six weeks since the infection began and there is only one known survivor. Using a scissor former football player "Scary" Perry Dawsey surgically removed the triangle, but has traces left that enable him to detect human carriers. When he finds them he kills them over the chagrin of CIA agent Dew Phillips who needs living specimen for Doctor Margaret Montoya to conduct research on, but cannot alienate the only human capable of finding them. However, Perry is scared as he feels something voodoo like is occurring in Michigan.

This exciting sequel to INFECTED is an action-packed thriller reminiscent of the INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS. At a time of potential pandemic doom, the change in leadership is a refreshing spin as that adds vulnerability that seems eerily similar to the economic crisis although one would have thought the President elect would have been told several weeks earlier. Still this is a fast-paced horror thriller as the new PROTUS must decide what to do about the biggest terrorist threat to the nation.

    DO NOT BUY--EBOOK IS BROKEN

My first clue that the book was horribly converted to ebook should have been in the Prologue, where one can immediately see that paragraph formatting was never added to the CSS of the book. I blame B&N for this, too, since there is obviously no quality control of what is being offered for sale. Only takes a minute to notice this problem.

But even worse, the book is out of order, something I would have found out if I had read other reviews. There's a jump in the plot--I just thought it was bad writing--and then at about pp. 124-125, the plot jumps back again. This ebook was put together OUT OF ORDER.

Out of order or page numbers jumping.

Question for those reviewers: are the pages really out of order, or does it actually jump back to earlier page numbers? I have encountered this before. While annoying, I change to a smaller font size and it fixes itself. Once I am past the problem area by a few pages, I switch back to the preferred font size. If the plot itself is actually ordered wrong rather than the page number problem, I will skip this purchase.

Don't buy this ebook from B&N

The writing is very good. I have read some of his other books and they were very good. However this ebook is out of sequence. The end of the book takes place in the middle.

    Too Much Junk

Short and sweet version: Way too much jumping around in the name of creating some apparent chaos, and way too much foul language that is not needed and does not help the story or the characters. Very poor writing.

    Sigler Rocks

Anyone who likes Horror, sci-fi action books is gonna love this. Start with Infected then get this part two of the series. You wont be dissapointed. The writing style keeps you on the edge of your seat and the science behind the sci-fiction is alarmingly accurate.

Grabs you, holds on, but don't you dare tell the ending!

This is the best book Scott Sigler has published. Very hard book to put down.
I found Scott by listening to his podcasts. He does such a great job, that even though I bought and read Contagious, I still listen to every episode of Contagious. His podcasts bring his stories to life.
    Great Job, Scott!!!

    I Also Recommend:

    Finally!

If you don't know Scott Sigler yet, then you haven't met the new face of modern scifi-horror-thills. Sigler, the self-proclaimed "Future Dark Overlord" of Earth is a true master of the grab-you-by-the-seat-of-your-pants literary amusement park ride. He weaves hard science, often straight out of today's headlines, into dark, twisted, and always surprising plots. We've all been to a horror movie or two that was so gut wrenching it made you want to puke. What Scott does to Perry Dawsey, the main character in "Infected" and "Contagious" is the written form of that movie experience at it's best. If you're a fan of science fiction, horror, or psychological thrillers, then do yourself a favor and make room on the bookshelf for anything he writes. I've read Infected, and Contagious, and listened to the "podiobook" audio productions of Earthcore, Ancestor, The Rookie, and Nocturnal. Scott Sigler rocks. "No bout adout it".

Kudos, from an original Junkie, Scott.

    I Can't Wait!

I started listening to the Infected podcast by Scott Sigler and was hooked from the prologue. I had started around chapters 46-50, but starting at episode one it only took me a couple of days to catch up.I would laugh at the people having to wait for their "fix", but once I caught up I had a hard time being patient and waiting. Contagious is the sequel to Infected and I am hooked on the 4 podcast episodes so far just as I was for Infected. I am a junkie(sigler junkie not a real one...). I personally can not wait until Contagious comes out and I hope that the FDO never stops writing. Get it it's awesome!

Had it all, suspense, action and great characters.

This was a fantastic sequel to "Infected". Had it all, suspense, action and great characters. The detail was really great. The author really did his homework on weapons system, medicine and geography. I was absolutely stunned by the action descriptions. The suspense was gripping. Character interaction played such an important part in the story. Characters continued to develop throughout the book. Some shocking surprises along the way. A definite must read if you have read the first book. Reading the first book is a prerequisite. I just could not like the ending. The ending was, to me, disappointing. As if all the hard work and sacrifice throughout the book was for nothing. But, getting there was a first rate thrill ride.

    A continuation to Robert Heinlein

Again, if you have read Robert Heinlein's The Puppet Masters you have read the main premise of Contagious. Scary Perry makes the book. It is fast paced and entertaining. Would have given it 5 stars were not for the parallels which makes it a bit unoriginal. However, kudos to Scott Sigler for pulling it off.

    Nook book is fine

I was afraid to buy this for the longest time due to the comments about the book being out of order. I finally bit the bullet and can happily report that it has apparently been fixed. And I absolutely loved reading the further adventures of Scary Perry Dawsey.

Picked this one up for the cover and could not put it down till the last page.

I am a big fan of Zombie books but I needed a change of pace so I picked up this little gem. It was fast paced and I really liked how short most of the chapters were since every one left me wanting more. I did find myself focusing most of my attention on 3 of the main characters and being a little bored by many of the supporting characters. My only regret was that I did not find out that this book was a sequel until I was almost done with the story. This book had aliens, soldiers, a psychotic anti-hero, and plenty of well placed violence, definitely a fun read.
