Overview

Malcolm Hillier fired the imagination in 1991 with his best-selling Container Gardening. Now again he draws upon his immense creative energy to present a dazzling array of design ideas that prove container displays can be an exciting source of garden color, indoors and outdoors, in every season.

  • Calendar of Projects, the book's highly practical Introduction surveys the full range of pots available and sets down design guidelines for mixing pot and plant colors, textures, and shapes. The heart of the book is a lavishly illustrated catalog of planting projects for every type of container and every month of the year. Each page reveals a close-up color photograph of a planting plan, supported by practical tips on growing needs, plant quantities, and pot sizes.
  • Site Suggestions, Photo essays explore how different garden locations - flights of steps or an entrance porch - can be enhanced with container displays. Combined with the planting projects, these present a multitude of creative gardening ideas that puts Malcolm Hillier's latest book in a class of its own.

Good book - but where do you find all the plants?

This is a really nice, simple book with exquisite planting ideas. I do have two suggestions that could/would make it better (for me): 1. Have a 'top down' view of each planting to see layout and, 2. Suggestions of online websites that sell the specific plant material exhibited in each of the lovely arrangements shown for those who would like to copy the exact planting (and for those who are not as creative, or knowledgeable, about plants as I am). Local plant nurseries in NH scratched their heads in wonder at some of the plant material used in this book when I asked.
