Editorial Reviews

Entrepreneurs are highly regarded in the U.S. Included here are 74 biographical profiles of entrepreneurs chosen from the mid-1970s and 1980s. The entries are arranged alphabetically and include both factual data (company name, address, telephone number, founding date, current revenues, number of employees, etc.) as well as five to seven pages of text. The essays follow a standard format with such sections as "Founders," "Business Origin," "Business Growth," "Business Obstacles," "Keys to Success," "Future Vision," and "Entrepreneurial Lessons." A short bibliography on the entrepreneur and company follows each entry. Each profile is signed by the compiler, most of whom appear to be free-lance writers. An index provides access by personal and corporate name, geographic location, type of business, and subject headings, such as "family in businesses" and "women in business". The 74 entries represent 36 industries, evenly divided between manufacturing and service. However, 16 profiles come from the computer industry, which comes as no surprise with the explosion of activity in this field during the 1980s. Of course, Steven Jobs, former Apple computer guru and current NeXT Computer CEO, is profiled in this book, along with Raymond Kurzweil, Debbi Fields of cookie fame, and film and record producer David Geffen. Industries covered range from a winery to the Home Shopping Network. The purpose of "Contemporary Entrepreneurs" is to give students a starting place for case studies, investors a place to find information on areas of economic growth, and other entrepreneurs the inspiration and vision for their particular pursuits. The work's primary usefulness will be in a college library, though much of the information in each biography could be assembled from a search in the standard periodical sources listed in the bibliographies provided at the end of each entry.
In this age of megacorporations, scholars of "free enterprise" a discipline not found in all colleges managed to find 74 Americans who started and ran their own business, whom they exhibit as ideals for the rest of us to emulate. Includes homey biographical sketches, the founding and operation of the business, and the lessons learned. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
