Editorial Reviews

Martha Sleutel
This book provides a clear, concise review of the major healthcare issues and practice problems facing nurses today. Topics range from nursing education and professional image to nursing research, legal issues, and healthcare delivery issues. The authors accurately describe this as an overview of significant trends and issues facing current and future nurses. They also provide a brief, historical review of nursing, followed by worthy examinations of contemporary issues, such as nursing's portrayal in the media. These topics deserve scrutiny by nurses, and this book nicely provides this opportunity. It is ideally suited for nursing students approaching graduation. However, any nurses unfamiliar with these contemporary topics would find the information concise, interesting, and easy to read. A range of diverse topics are covered in a thorough and engaging manner. Much of the book, including sections on professional survival strategies, legal and ethical issues, and leadership and management offer useful information and insights that the new nurse could immediately apply to his or her practice. The chapters on healthcare delivery issues and nursing education provide a valuable discussion of controversies and implications that impact both consumers and clinicians -- a must read for any nurse unaware of these issues. The vignette that begins every chapter entices the reader, who is then rewarded with interesting descriptions of issues presented in a factual and informative manner. This book provides an accurate and helpful analysis of current issues and trends. Most busy nurses and students will find this book a pleasure to read, certain to provoke questions and discussions.
