Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Viki Hedderick, DEd, MSN, BSN (Edinboro University of Pennsylvania)
Description: This is the 7th edition of a book, originally published in 1989, that provides prospective and current students with valuable information to set the stage for embarking in nursing as well as how to be successful throughout a program and upon graduation.
Purpose: The author identifies the objectives as providing emphasis on life-long learning. She effectively immerses readers in foundational knowledge of nursing from the past to present. Admittedly, when reading the author's objectives/intent, I thought the book was intended as a preprogram resource. However, as I began to read, I realized it had a textbook component.
Audience: The intended audience is incoming nursing students. However, the book provides direction for individuals throughout their educational journey and upon graduation. This leaves me confused about whether the audience is incoming students or if the book is intended as an introductory textbook.
Features: The book is thorough with regard to information for students to be successful. The first chapters focus on self-exploration related to study habits, communication, and time management of nursing school and life. Then the book diverges into a history of nursing, patient care, ethics, etc. The graphics and language are appropriate for the intended readers. The instructor resources are plentiful, including online access to objectives, quizzes PowerPoint case studies, etc.
Assessment: This is appropriate for introductory-level students and will be useful as they progress through the PN program. It is an easy read and full of illustrations and graphics to supplement the text.
