Overview

In the English-language literature on the philosophy of social science, says Sherratt (philosophy, U. of Oxford, UK), the continental tradition is largely marginalized and ostracized. Here she offers a broad overview of its development, emphasizing the enduring influence of its canon—stemming back some two thousand years to Ancient Greece and early Christianity—and the humanist goals of its project. She begins with an introduction to the main branches of hermeneutics, describing its earliest uses as a term in Greek texts, looking at Roman innovations, examining biblical hermeneutics through to the Enlightenment, exploring German developments including phenomenology, and concluding with a discussion of Gadamer and his followers. She then turns to the tradition of geneaology, focusing primarily on its articulation by Friedrich Nietzsche and its uses in the works of Michel Foucault. The tradition of critical theory is discussed in chapters exploring the influence of Christian ideas on the critical rationalist tradition begun by Kant and Hegel, critical rationalism's influence on Marx and Marxism, and the philosophy of the early Frankfurt School.
