Continuing Care Retirement Communities: An Insider's Guide

This wonderful little book is a tremendous aid to learning about continuing care retirement communities. It is chock full of information, ideas, suggestions, and useful aids for exploring and making decisions about CCRCs. The author, Bernice Hunt, takes the reader on her personal journey toward a move into a CCRC, sharing her concerns and worries (not surprisingly, the same as mine) and advising on how to make an informed decision about whether or not to move to a CCRC and how to choose the right place. She tells you exactly what to look for (including how to read the fine print), examines the pros and cons, and warns of unseen pitfalls. The appendix contains invaluable lists of things to look for in comparing CCRC¿s and their contracts, and there is a worksheet for comparing the cost of a CCRC to what you are currently paying in your home. What I liked best about the book is that, along with being a practical, informative guide, it is honest, at times lighthearted and humorous, and very wise. Mrs. Hunt communicates her experiences in a very personal way. She makes you feel as if she's sitting in your living room like an old friend, discussing your concerns and sharing not only her expertise, but also her own fears and emotions about making a difficult move. Don't make yours without first consulting her. This book is perfect for anyone interested in learning about CCRCs and a must-read for those considering moving to one.

    The Independent Living Option

As the American senior population continues to grow, the proliferation of retirement communities and retirement living options becomes more complicated, if not overwhelming. Demographics show that by 2011, baby boomers will become senior citizens and that in 2030, people over 65 years of age and older will constitute 20% of the American population. An attractive retirement community option that appeals to relatively independent, both physically and socially, people is the Continuing CAre Retirement Community. Bernice Hunt, a resident of a CCRC outside of Philadelphia, provides an insightful 'insider's guide' into the pro'c and con's of living in facility that is maintenance-free, replete with social activities, health services, and all the amenities that seniors expect in their 'Golden Years'. Hunt's account of the multi-site/service CCRC community is a welcome addition to the growing literature on a subject that more and more of us will be turning to in the not-to-distant future.
