Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Francoeur (The Complete Dictionary of Sexology) and Noonan (coeditor, Does Anyone Still Remember When Sex Was Fun?) had libraries' limited shelf space and budgets in mind when they consolidated the four previous volumes of this encyclopedia (released sequentially) into one treasure-trove. Covered here are the sexual attitudes and behavior of more than 60 countries (15 new to this edition, with the rest of the entries updated), including most large and influential nations like the United States, China, Russia, South Africa, India, Japan, and Mexico. Despite the addition of countries like Botswana, Ghana, and Nepal, one is still left with the impression of arbitrary selection and a weightedness toward Europe. Each entry more or less addresses 14 topics-including interpersonal behaviors (homosexual and heterosexual) throughout the life span, gender diversity and transgender issues, unconventional sexual behavior, diseases, and dysfunctions-before concluding with a bibliography. Readers will also find discussion of more exotic topics (e.g., sexuality in space) and current issues (e.g., the rise of civil unions in contrast to declining traditional marriage and birth rates). The articles are written straightforwardly and from a multidisciplinary perspective by a panel of 270 trained natives or area experts. In a final section, the editors draw generalizations about trends in human sexuality. This unique compilation of specialized knowledge is recommended for research collections i0n the social sciences, where it could be useful for reference as well as a secondary source for cross-cultural research. Given the updating and compactness, it could be useful even where the previous volumes are available.-Antoinette Brinkman, M.L.S., Evansville, IN Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
