Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Elizabeth Leis-Newman
It is almost impossible to find a young adult textbook on contraception and pregnancy that will please everyone. While this one provides accurate scientific information, the anecdotes, fictional characters, and messages will turn off most educators and readers. The text veers between condescending sentences such as “you’re not a little kid anymore,” to an analogy about how virginity is like gum; i.e. once it is used, no one wants it. The book intersperses sections and quotes from fictional teens, including one who appears to be a victim of abuse, and another who becomes pregnant and decides to raise her baby. Chapters include Male and Female Reproductive Systems, Abstinence, Contraception (Birth Control), Pregnancy Choices, First Trimester, Second and Third Trimesters, Labor and Delivery, Parenting or Adoption. The most useful sections for public health educators will likely be the straightforward subsections on natural family planning, hormonal contraception, barrier methods (such as condoms), sterilization and emergency contraception. The chapters on the male and female reproduction systems also are acceptable for those who need guidance in explaining biology. Overall, students would be far better served if the authors had stuck to science and the consequences of unplanned pregnancy rather than introducing characters that feel false, and value judgments that would be far better coming from teachers, parents or healthcare providers. It is part of the “Young Adult’s Guide to the Science of Health” series. Reviewer: Elizabeth Leis-Newman; Ages 13 up.
