All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis tailored their contemporary dance-pop to the emerging personality of Janet Jackson, who attempted to take control of her life on this record. In the course of that attempt, she came across as an aggressive, independent woman, notably on "What Have You Done for Me Lately." But the album was primarily a production showcase; it may have been tailored to Jackson's persona, but the real artists were Jam and Lewis.

In response to Melanie Andrew Post

Um, yea just came across this post and I must say that I can not agree with this post. The song is good and it comes off what was at the time Janet's real debut. Lets face it her first two albums "yes they were still called that back then" were less than stellar. But what I do not agree with is what was said about Ms. Andrews. I have first hand knowledge from someone whom I am very close to, that Ms. Andrews was/is nothing but a user and will stab one in the back to get what she wants. She should have played her cards better and walked the line a bit better and maybe Ms. Jackson would have kept her around, but clearly she didn't do that. She has a knack for hurting and lying to people and although it's never nice to hear about people having to struggle in their life, you should not point fingers at Ms. Jackson for not continuing that relationship, when in fact they should be pointed in NO one but Ms. Andrews direction. I have heard Ms. Andrews voice and I disagree that she would have had a bigger career had things gone better with Janet...insane.

Melanie Andrews wrote "Let's Wait Awhile"

"Let's Wait Awhile" is probably one of the best songs on the album. Melanie also was one of Janet's backgound singers. What is not well known is the fact that her voice was so clean that Janet used her to enhance her own voice while recording. Listen carefully to this song and you will notice that in fact their are two singing at the same time. Also she contributed to Janet's dance steps creating new moves that set Janets apart from other artists. Today Melanie is still writing, and composing songs and some has been used by other artist like that of Earth Wind And Fire's comeback tour and album. "Very sucessful in Europe". She also has a dance studio teaching here style to the younger generation. Unfortunantly it has been a bumpy ride in her career, promoting and contributing not only to herself, but also those in the industry. It really is ashame that Janet elects not to continue that once great relationship they had. Melanie would today be a greater positive force in the world of music if she had.
