    One of the greatest

    This novel was such a pleasure to read and so interesting I could not put it down. Though I came away sad that everything is so difficult for all the characters, that is life. Everyone, including the author, discusses this novel as a novel about the impact of a dictator. I do not see it as a dictator novel. It is about life and the limited options we all face no matter what world we live in. Everyone winds up with half a loaf or less. The quantity of life portrayed is astonishing. One of the great novels of all time.

    Disappointing

    This was my fourth Vargas Llosa book, and the most disappointing. It is difficult reading, with the writer jumping back and forth in time, but for all that work, the story and the mood were flat. The other books of his that I've read build and build to a stunning climax. You feel a sense of satisfaction at the end. Not so here.
