Being content but not extremely happy with Rosetta Stone, I decided to give this book a try. And I'm glad I did. It starts off with explaining the proper way to learn a language, which is repetition and drawing connections rather than mentally translating. Each lesson then starts off with vocabulary, and then moves on to fun and easy to read dialogues. My family is hosting a German foreign exchange student, and she's commented on this book being well done and accurate.

I've studied German all my life and have seen almost every German text available, and it never ceases to amaze me that this book isn't more popular than it is. For $9.95, the book offers 20 lessons with intellegently-chosen vocabulary, a comprehensive grammar reference section, a list of proverbs, a dictionary and more. Stores such as B&N and its competitors have a ton of German textbooks that cost a lot more and feature a lot less. Anyone studying German - regardless of proficiency level - could learn something from this book. I can't possibly give this book its due with a few words, but suffice it to say that I've gone through other courses for a lot more money and yet learned the most from this book, which costs less than ten dollars. To put it simply, this book is the best-kept secret among German texts that I know of, and I know just about all of them. For anyone - especially for beginners, but for advanced students as well - this book is simply a spectacular value. Pick it up and forget the other texts until your German is good enough to start absorbing (and properly using) slang.

this book, along with the other books--french, portuguese, italian, spanish and greek-- in this series are a great way to learn a language-- as a supplement to other methods such as classes or even learning through the internet. The conversations are somewhat dated, but a modern German English dictionary will help. The Pronunciation and phonetics are a GREAT help. And the Grammar section is great too. For $10.00, it is a bargin.

This book is titled "Conversational German ..." I interpret this as a book used to learn the German language using conversation, rather than learning lessons with nouns and verbs, etc. This book has too many lessons that need studying, and not enough conversation. This book is more of a text book, rather than a conversational book. It may teach the reader German, but it is not enjoyable to use. I have been very happy with the Russian version of this book. There are lots of examples to read. This was an enjoyable method to learn the language. This German book is very different. Too many new words and rules are introduced, with little dialog and examples to read.
