Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"Pimsleur programs provide plenty of positive reinforcement that will keep learners on track, and we found that Pimsleur gave us more proficiency and confidence in speaking the new language than any of the other language programs we reviewed." -- AudioFile Magazine

"EXTREMELY ACCESSIBLE...each section within the lessons is short enough to hold our attention, and there is enough repetition to teach even those who consider themselves slow learners...Pimsleur [programs] are extremely thorough and easy to use -- quite lively!" -- Boston Herald

"Learn French while commuting, German while jogging, Spanish (or Russian, Italian, and Japanese) while cooking all with NO WRITTEN MATERIALS!" -- New York Daily News

"Designed for the ear and not the eye...the lessons provide PERFECT 30-minute bites of work." -- St Louis Post-Dispatch

"Learn to habla español or parlez français before your next trip aboard. The interactive LESSONS CHALLENGE STUDENTS to use new words in conversation instead of memorize them." -- American Way (American Airlines inflight magazine)

Meet the Author

Dr. Paul Pimsleur devoted his life to language teaching and testing and was one of the world’s leading experts in applied linguistics. After years of experience and research, Dr. Pimsleur developed The Pimsleur Method based on two key principles: the Principle of Anticipation and a scientific principle of memory training that he called “Graduated Interval Recall.” This Method has been applied to the many levels and languages of the Pimsleur Programs.

    One of the Best

The Pimsleur stuff is great, and I¿d rank it right up there with the Learning Spanish Like Crazy CDs, with the latter winning out by a nose (more on that later). Interactive, fun, and proven to yield results, I can¿t say enough about this package. My Spanish has improved immensely due to my work with this material ¿ so much so that some of my native Spanish speaking friends have paid me compliments. Instead of rote learning, the Pimsleur method teaches you concepts that enable you to eventually figure things out for yourself. Kinda like the old ¿teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime¿ bit. The pace is much slower than other similar programs, which may be frustrating for some, but I found that I retained the material better this way. The two biggest weak points of Pimsleur Spanish are that some of the vocabulary is outdated and the actual amount of vocabulary that you can learn is limited. The Learning Spanish Like Crazy series is superior in both regards, which is why I put it ahead of Pimsleur. All in all, though, this was a very worthwhile purchase.

    Excellent Product

I've only completed the first eight lessons and aleady I've acquired a better grasp of the language than I did in a semester-long adult ed Conversational Spanish course. I have a 30 minute drive to work and I repeat each lesson twice each day. Pimsleur uses native speakers of Spanish, both male and female, giving the listener excellent examples of pronunciation to mimic - I do find it is much easier to pattern my inflection after the female voice, so it's very helpful for listeners to have both models. Pimsleur's beginning lessons don't bogged down in the complexities of conjugation - in a beginning conversation, all one needs to know is how Yo speaks to Usted. It's not necessary to know how he, she, it, we, you, and they will do things. I'm sure that will come in later lessons. I already plan to purchase the complete Spanish I 30 lesson set. This is truly an excellent product. Get the B&N membership and enjoy the discount!
