Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Richardson (communications, Sam Houston State Univ.) here collects 23 interviews, including one of his own, conducted with Jimmy Carter over the last two decades. The interviews show Carter evolving from an embattled president with a penchant for misreading public moods to a confident elder statesman whose reputation has been enhanced by his work on behalf of international peace and health through the Carter Center. Most of the interviews are illuminating and entertaining and were conducted by such media notables as Walter Cronkite, Mike Wallace, and Barbara Walters. Arguably the best interview, conducted by Robert Fulghum in 1996, reveals an engaging ex-president secure in his religious beliefs and accomplishments. Carter regards Clinton, not Reagan, as the true Teflon president. Alleged sexual misconduct has not yet damaged Clinton, yet Carter's now quaint comment about lust in his heart, which appeared in a Playboy interview that is included in this anthology, caused a 15-point drop in his 1976 poll standings. See Douglas Brinkley's The Unfinished Presidency (LJ 5/15/98) for a comprehensive overview of Carter's post-presidency. Recommended for larger public and academic collections.--Karl Helicher, Upper Merion Twp. Lib., King of Prussia, PA
